The Complete Guide to Moving to Azle, Texas

by 10 Federal Storage

Published on August 19, 2026

Azle, Texas is a lakeside city of roughly 15,000 residents sitting about 20 miles northwest of downtown Fort Worth, wrapped around the western shore of Eagle Mountain Lake. It is one of the few places in the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex where you can own a home on acreage, launch a boat before work, and still reach a major employment corridor in under half an hour. Azle has grown by more than 17 percent since the 2020 census, and it has done so without losing the small town character that brings most people here in the first place.

What makes Azle genuinely different from other DFW suburbs is also what makes it slightly complicated to move to. The city sits astride the Parker–Tarrant county line. Its school district reaches into a third county. Its electric service is split between two entirely different regulatory systems depending on which side of a street you live on. None of this is difficult once you understand it, but almost no relocation guide explains it, and newcomers routinely get surprised.

This guide covers every part of that transition — neighborhoods, real costs, the housing market and why published price figures disagree so wildly, schools and the significant grade level changes now underway, commuting realities, utilities, healthcare, recreation, weather, and secure storage for the gap between move out and move in.

Quick Facts:

  • Population approximately 15,000 and growing roughly 2.6 percent annually
  • Straddles two counties: Parker and Tarrant
  • About 20 miles northwest of downtown Fort Worth via SH 199
  • Situated on Eagle Mountain Lake, a reservoir of nearly 8,700 acres
  • Cost of living slightly below the national average
  • Served by Azle ISD, which reaches into Tarrant, Parker, and Wise counties
  • Elevation 725 feet, ZIP code 76020
  • Named a Tree City USA community beginning in 2022
  • No state income tax in Texas

1. WHY CHOOSE AZLE?

A Real Lake, Inside Commuting Distance

Eagle Mountain Lake is the reason most people end up in Azle. It is a Tarrant Regional Water District reservoir of nearly 8,700 surface acres, formed on the West Fork of the Trinity River, and it sits roughly 12 miles from downtown Fort Worth. That combination is rare. Most DFW suburbs offer a retention pond and call it a lake. Azle offers genuine open water with real depth, real fishing, and a boating culture that has been established for generations.

The practical effect on daily life is significant:

  • Boating and watersports – Wakeboarding, skiing, sailing, and cruising on open water minutes from home
  • Fishing – Largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, and catfish, from shore or by boat
  • Public access – Shady Grove Park and Twin Points Park provide launch points and swim beaches without a private dock
  • Waterfront property – Actual lakefront homes exist here at prices that would buy a small condo in parts of the Metroplex
  • Eagle Mountain Park – A Tarrant Regional Water District nature park with overlook trails above the water
  • A community built around it – Lake events, a parade of lights, and a genuine boating social scene

More Land for the Money

Azle's central value proposition within DFW is square footage and acreage. The inner ring suburbs of Fort Worth simply cannot compete on lot size at Azle price points. Buyers relocating from higher cost metros consistently report that the same budget stretches dramatically further here.

  • Lots of one acre and larger are common on the outskirts of town
  • Homes generally range from roughly 1,400 to over 3,000 square feet
  • Many in town subdivisions sit on lots between roughly 0.15 and 0.35 acres
  • Detached garages, workshops, and boat parking are normal rather than exceptional
  • Horse property and small acreage exist within the greater Azle area
  • New construction is active on the edges of the city

A Small Town That Still Functions Like One

Azle has roughly 15,000 residents. That is small enough that the annual events actually draw the town out, and large enough to support a hospital, a full grocery landscape, and a school district with real athletic and career programs. The median age is about 35.6 years, and roughly four in ten households include school age children, which gives the community a distinctly family oriented rhythm.

Signals of that character:

  • A downtown Main Street with a historical museum in the original 1920s brick schoolhouse
  • Community events including Sting Fling, Follow the Flag, and the Christmas parade
  • A free summer concert series in Central Park on Friday evenings in May and June
  • An active public library that runs programming without requiring a card
  • Tree City USA recognition beginning in 2022
  • Homeownership around 71 percent, which produces long tenure and stable neighborhoods

Proximity Without the Price

Azle's position in the northwest corner of the Metroplex puts a great deal within reach:

  • Downtown Fort Worth – About 20 miles, typically 20 to 30 minutes
  • Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base – About 14 miles, roughly 15 to 22 minutes
  • Alliance corridor and north Fort Worth employment – Reachable via Loop 820 and I‑35W
  • DFW International Airport – Roughly 30 to 55 minutes depending on time of day
  • Downtown Dallas – Roughly 45 to 60 minutes in normal conditions
  • Springtown, Weatherford, and rural Parker County – Immediately west, 15 to 30 minutes

The Texas Tax Picture

Texas levies no state personal income tax. For households relocating from states that do, the difference on take home pay is immediate and often substantial. That advantage is partly offset by property taxes, which in Texas fund public education and local government and are correspondingly higher than in many states. Section 3 covers this in more detail, including the wrinkle unique to Azle.

The Honest Tradeoffs

No guide is worth much if it only lists advantages. Azle asks for real compromises:

  • You will drive. There is no commuter rail, no light rail, and no meaningful bus service. A personal vehicle is not optional, and a two adult household with different workplaces should budget for two.
  • The commute is longer than the inner suburbs. A typical Azle commute runs around 31 minutes, notably longer than closer in Tarrant County communities. That is the price of the square footage.
  • SH 199 is the only real artery. When it backs up, alternatives are limited, particularly across the water.
  • Retail and dining are modest. Serious shopping, varied restaurants, and cultural venues mean a drive toward Fort Worth.
  • The school district is solid, not elite. Azle ISD performs above the state average on several measures but does not compete with the Metroplex's top ranked districts. Families who prioritize district prestige above all else look elsewhere, and Azle families generally know that.

2. NEIGHBORHOODS AND COMMUNITIES IN AZLE

Azle is compact — under nine square miles inside the city limits — so "neighborhood" here often means a subdivision or a stretch of road rather than a large distinct district. Just as importantly, the greater Azle area includes several small incorporated cities and unincorporated communities that share the Azle mailing address, the Azle school district, or both. Understanding that distinction matters, because it determines your taxing jurisdictions, your city services, and sometimes your utility providers.

In Town Azle — Convenience and Established Streets

The core of the city, generally clustered around West Main Street, Southeast Parkway, and the older subdivisions branching off them.

In Town Azle Features:

  • Shortest drives to schools, the hospital, and the grocery stores
  • Mature trees and established landscaping
  • City water, sewer, and contracted garbage service included
  • Mix of homes from the 1960s through recent infill construction
  • Walkable access to Central Park and the library for some streets
  • Generally the most affordable entry point into Azle proper

This is the practical choice for buyers who want city services, short errands, and a lower price of entry, and who do not need acreage.

The Lake Side — Water Access and Premium Pricing

Neighborhoods stretching toward Eagle Mountain Lake, including areas near Shady Grove Park and along the shoreline roads.

Lake Side Highlights:

  • Waterfront, water view, and water access properties
  • The widest price range in the entire market, from modest older cottages to multimillion dollar estates
  • Boat storage, docks, and lifts as normal property features
  • Quieter, more spread out streets
  • Strong appeal to retirees, boaters, and remote workers
  • Older housing stock in places, with active remodel activity

Buyers should look carefully at what "lakefront" means on a given listing. Direct frontage, deeded access, and community access are three very different things with three very different price tags.

New Construction on the Outskirts

Growth is concentrated on Azle's edges, where builders have room for full subdivisions. Communities such as Stone Eagle have been developed specifically around first time buyers and growing families who want Azle ISD access and lakeside proximity without a custom build budget.

New Construction Highlights:

  • Modern floor plans and current energy efficiency standards
  • Builder warranties and predictable maintenance in early years
  • Often the newest infrastructure in the area
  • Possible HOA dues, which are less common in older Azle neighborhoods
  • Lots typically smaller than the acreage properties buyers may be picturing
  • Frequently outside the city limits, which changes your utility and tax situation

Acreage and Rural Azle

Beyond the subdivisions, the area opens into the Cross Timbers landscape of rolling terrain, oak groves, and small ranches.

Acreage Highlights:

  • One acre to substantial tracts, with horse property available
  • Shops, barns, and outbuildings common
  • Well water and septic systems in place of city utilities on many properties
  • Volunteer or contracted fire protection in some areas rather than city fire service
  • Longer drives to everything, including school bus pickup
  • Genuine privacy and dark skies

Prospective buyers on acreage should investigate water source, septic condition and permitting, road maintenance responsibility, and emergency services coverage before committing. These are routine questions here and sellers expect them.

Neighboring Communities Sharing the Azle Area

Pelican Bay – A small incorporated city on the lake immediately adjacent to Azle, served by Azle ISD, with its own city government and Pelican Park on the water

Lakeside – A small town southeast of Azle toward Lake Worth, served by Azle ISD

Sanctuary – A very small incorporated community in the Azle area, also served by Azle ISD

Reno – A Parker County city just west of Azle along the SH 199 corridor

Briar – An unincorporated community northwest of Azle spanning multiple counties

Springtown – A separate Parker County town about ten miles northwest with its own school district, frequently considered alongside Azle by buyers seeking more land

The County Line Question

This deserves its own attention because it catches nearly every newcomer. Azle sits in both Parker County and Tarrant County. Your address determines which one you are in, and that determines:

  • Which appraisal district assesses your property and sets your protest deadlines
  • Which county offices handle vehicle registration, title transfer, and voter registration
  • Your total property tax rate, since county and special district rates differ
  • Which sheriff's office and county services respond outside city police jurisdiction
  • Where you serve jury duty

Before you make an offer, confirm the county in writing. A listing agent should know immediately, and both appraisal districts have public property search tools that will settle it. Do not assume the Azle mailing address tells you anything definitive — it does not.

3. COST OF LIVING IN AZLE

Azle's overall cost of living sits marginally below the national average, with the most recent composite index readings landing right around 98 on a scale where 100 is the national average. Within the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, that positions Azle as a genuine value market rather than a bargain one.

Cost of Living Comparison (National Average = 100)

  • Overall cost of living: approximately 98
  • Housing: near or slightly below the national average, and well below the DFW core
  • Groceries: close to the national average, with a full range of chains within a short drive
  • Transportation: above average in practice, because mileage here is unavoidable
  • Healthcare: near the national average, with a community hospital in town
  • Utilities: variable, and heavily dependent on your electricity arrangement (see Section 9)

What These Numbers Actually Mean

Composite indexes flatten a lot of nuance. Three Azle specific factors matter more than the headline number.

Transportation is your real variable cost. There is no transit alternative. A household driving 25 miles each way, five days a week, is absorbing fuel, maintenance, tires, and depreciation that a household in a walkable neighborhood simply does not. Budget honestly for this before you conclude Azle is cheaper than a closer in option.

Property tax offsets the no income tax advantage. Texas funds schools and local government through property taxes. If you are relocating from a state with an income tax, run both sides of that trade with real numbers for your income and your target home value, not with rules of thumb.

Electricity costs vary by address, not just by usage. This is genuinely unusual and it is covered in detail in Section 9. Two identical homes on opposite sides of an Azle street can have meaningfully different electric arrangements.

Sample Monthly Budget Estimates

These are illustrative planning figures, not quotes. Your actual costs will depend on your home, your commute, your household, and your insurance profile.

Single Person Renter

  • Rent, one bedroom or small two bedroom: $1,100 to $1,450
  • Electricity: $110 to $200 depending on season and provider arrangement
  • Natural gas: $20 to $80, seasonal
  • City water, sewer, garbage, and stormwater: $60 to $100
  • Internet: $50 to $90
  • Transportation including fuel, insurance, and maintenance: $450 to $650
  • Groceries: $400 to $550

Family of Four, Homeowner

  • Mortgage principal and interest on a median priced home: varies substantially with rate and down payment
  • Property taxes and homeowners insurance, typically escrowed: a significant line item in Texas, budget carefully
  • Electricity: $180 to $400 depending on season, home size, and provider arrangement
  • Natural gas: $30 to $130, seasonal
  • City water, sewer, garbage, and stormwater: $90 to $160
  • Internet: $60 to $110
  • Transportation, two vehicles: $900 to $1,400
  • Groceries: $1,000 to $1,400

Median household income in Azle is approximately $68,500, with households headed by residents in the 45 to 64 age range reporting substantially higher figures. Roughly 12 percent of residents live below the poverty line, close to the national rate.

Property Taxes and the Two County Complication

Texas property taxes are assessed by an appraisal district and levied by multiple overlapping jurisdictions — county, city, school district, college district, hospital district, and sometimes emergency services or municipal utility districts. Your total rate is the sum of all of them.

In Azle, this is more complicated than usual, because the city spans two counties and the school district spans three. Depending on your exact address, your bill may be assessed by the Parker County Appraisal District or the Tarrant Appraisal District, and your set of taxing jurisdictions may differ from a neighbor's a mile away.

What to do about it:

  • Identify your county before making an offer, not after
  • Pull the actual tax record for the specific property from the correct appraisal district
  • Ask what the taxes will be after reassessment, not what the current owner pays, since long held homesteads can carry caps that do not transfer
  • File for your homestead exemption after closing if the property is your primary residence
  • Note the annual protest deadline for your appraisal district and calendar it

Rates are set annually by each jurisdiction and change. Rather than relying on any figure published in an article, including this one, confirm current rates directly with the appraisal district that covers your property, and consult a tax professional about your specific situation. This guide does not provide tax advice.

4. HOUSING MARKET OVERVIEW

If you research Azle home prices online, you will encounter figures ranging from roughly $290,000 to over $500,000 for what appears to be the same market. That is not an error in any single source. It is a predictable result of different sites measuring genuinely different things, and understanding why will make you a much better informed buyer.

Why the Published Numbers Disagree

Three distinct measurements get reported interchangeably:

  • Median sale price – What homes actually closed at. Recent readings for Azle have run in the low $300,000s, with month to month movement and roughly flat to modestly negative year over year change.
  • Median list price – What sellers are currently asking. This runs dramatically higher, in some published figures approaching or exceeding $480,000.
  • Median assessed or estimated home value – A modeled figure across all housing stock, not just what is selling. Recent estimates have landed near $312,000.

Two Azle specific factors widen the gap further:

Waterfront inventory skews the list price. Eagle Mountain Lake properties reach into the millions. A handful of them sitting on the market for months pulls the median asking price far above what typical buyers actually transact at, while contributing almost nothing to the median sale price.

Some sites use a radius, not a boundary. Several national portals return "Azle" results that clearly include Fort Worth neighborhoods well outside the city and outside Azle ISD. If a site's list of Azle neighborhoods includes places you recognize as Fort Worth, you are looking at a radius search, and its price data does not describe Azle.

The practical takeaway: anchor your expectations to median sale price, ask your agent for closed comparable sales inside your target attendance zone and county, and treat list price medians as a description of inventory rather than of value.

Home Buying in Azle

The market is best characterized as moderately competitive rather than frenzied. Homes have recently been selling in roughly 50 to 60 days on average, typically a bit below list price, with well priced and well presented homes moving considerably faster. That is a meaningfully more comfortable environment than the fastest DFW suburbs, where buyers still face compressed decision windows.

General Price Bands (verify current figures with your agent):

  • Entry level and older in town homes: roughly $200,000 to $290,000
  • Mainstream family homes: roughly $290,000 to $420,000
  • New construction and larger homes: roughly $380,000 to $550,000
  • Acreage properties: highly variable, driven by land more than structure
  • Lake access and waterfront: $500,000 into the millions

Home Types Available:

  • Single family detached homes, overwhelmingly the dominant type
  • Ranch style homes on generous lots
  • Two story traditional and modern farmhouse new construction
  • Manufactured and mobile homes, a real segment of this market
  • Acreage properties with shops, barns, and outbuildings
  • Waterfront and water view homes on Eagle Mountain Lake
  • Limited condo and townhome inventory

The Azle Rental Market

Azle's rental market is small and dominated by single family homes rather than large apartment complexes. Buyers who plan to rent first should understand that inventory is thin, turns over slowly, and is not concentrated in a few searchable properties the way it is in an apartment heavy suburb.

Approximate Rental Ranges:

  • One bedroom apartments and small units: $900 to $1,200
  • Two bedroom apartments and duplexes: $1,150 to $1,500
  • Three bedroom homes: $1,600 to $2,200
  • Four bedroom and larger homes: $2,200 to $3,000
  • Lake area and acreage rentals: highly variable, often above these ranges

Median gross rent across all Azle rental housing has recently been reported around $1,438.

What to Expect:
Single family rentals typically place all utilities in the tenant's name, including water and garbage. Pet friendly rentals are common given the area's character, generally with a deposit and often monthly pet rent. Lease terms are usually twelve months, and many owners here are individual landlords rather than management companies, which means the process is often more personal and less standardized.

Buying Considerations Specific to Azle

  • Confirm the county and the attendance zone before you fall in love with a house, particularly given the zone changes described in Section 5
  • Ask whether the property is inside the city limits, which determines city utilities, city services, and city tax
  • On acreage, verify water and septic including well condition, septic permitting, and inspection history
  • Inspect for foundation movement, which is a normal diligence item across North Texas clay soils
  • Get a roof age and hail history, because it will affect your insurance premium and deductible structure
  • For lake property, understand the difference between deeded frontage, leased shoreline, and community access, and confirm any dock permitting

5. SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION

Azle Independent School District

Azle ISD serves roughly 7,200 students across 12 campuses. The district's footprint is unusually broad for its size: it reaches into Tarrant, Parker, and Wise counties, and serves the incorporated cities of Azle, Lakeside, Reno, Pelican Bay, and Sanctuary in addition to surrounding unincorporated areas.

District Snapshot:

  • Approximately 7,200 students across 12 campuses
  • Student to teacher ratio of about 15 to 1, matching the state average
  • Reading proficiency modestly above the Texas average
  • Math proficiency above the Texas average
  • Graduation rate ranking among the stronger tiers of Texas districts
  • Roughly 38 percent of students qualify for free or reduced price meals

Important: Grade Configuration and Attendance Zones Are Changing

This is the single most important thing a relocating family needs to know about Azle ISD right now, and it is why you should not rely on older articles or on a listing's school assignment without verifying.

The district approved revised attendance zone boundaries at a board meeting in December 2025, taking effect for the 2026–2027 school year. The changes accompany a grade level reconfiguration:

  • All eight elementary campuses move to serving grades Pre‑K through 5
  • Junior high campuses move to serving grades 6 through 8
  • Boundaries were redrawn to balance enrollment across campuses and accommodate projected growth

What this means for you: a home's historical school assignment may no longer be accurate. Real estate listings, third party school rating sites, and neighborhood guides frequently lag boundary changes by a year or more. Before you commit to a property specifically for a campus assignment, confirm it directly against the district's current attendance zone map and school locator tool, and ask the district about transfer policy if the assignment is not what you expected.

Campuses and Programs

Azle High School anchors the district. It carries a well established athletic tradition — the Azle Hornets — alongside the Azle Marching Green Pride, a marching band program that is a genuine point of community identity. The high school also offers career and technical education pathways and a JROTC program that families connected to the nearby Joint Reserve Base often value specifically.

Azle Hornet Academy provides a non traditional route to a high school diploma through a fully online, state accredited curriculum, with certified teachers available for support and tutoring. It is registered with the state as a dropout recovery campus, and it exists to serve students for whom the traditional schedule is not working.

Program strengths across the district include:

  • Advanced Placement and dual credit coursework
  • Career and technical education pathways
  • JROTC
  • Competitive athletics across multiple sports
  • A nationally recognized marching band tradition
  • Special education and support services

Enrolling Your Student

Have the following ready before you attempt enrollment, because missing documents are the most common cause of delay:

  • Proof of residence in the attendance zone, typically a lease or closing document plus a current utility bill
  • The student's birth certificate
  • The student's Social Security card, where applicable
  • Immunization records meeting current Texas requirements
  • The most recent report card and withdrawal or transfer documents from the previous school
  • Photo identification for the enrolling parent or guardian
  • Custody or guardianship documentation if applicable

Request records from your current district well before you move. Transfers between states in particular can take weeks, and enrollment cannot be finalized without them.

Private, Charter, and Homeschool Options

Within Azle itself, private school options are limited, consisting largely of faith based and preschool programs. Families seeking a broader private landscape generally look toward Fort Worth, where the full range of independent, parochial, and specialized schools is available within a 20 to 30 minute drive. Charter school options similarly cluster in the greater Fort Worth area.

Texas has a well established homeschool framework and an active support network across the DFW area, including co ops, enrichment programs, and athletic leagues. Families new to homeschooling in Texas should review current state requirements directly.

Higher Education

Azle does not have a college campus, but several institutions are within commuting distance:

  • Tarrant County College – Multiple Fort Worth area campuses offering two year degrees, certificates, workforce programs, and transfer pathways
  • Weatherford College – A Parker County community college west of Azle
  • Texas Christian University – Private university in Fort Worth
  • Texas Wesleyan University – Private university in Fort Worth
  • University of Texas at Arlington – Large public research university, roughly 40 minutes east
  • Tarleton State University – With a Fort Worth campus in addition to its Stephenville main campus

6. EMPLOYMENT AND ECONOMY

Economic Overview

Azle is fundamentally a residential community within a very large regional economy. Most working residents commute, and the practical question for a relocating household is not "what is the Azle job market" but "what can I reach from Azle in 30 minutes." The answer is: a great deal.

Economic Indicators:

  • Median household income approximately $68,500
  • Roughly 71 percent homeownership
  • Population growth of approximately 2.6 percent annually
  • Typical commute of about 31 minutes
  • Located within the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area, one of the fastest growing large metros in the United States

Where Azle Residents Actually Work

Census data reflecting where Azle residents live rather than where they work shows the largest sectors as retail trade, healthcare and social assistance, and construction. That distribution tells you something real: this is a community of skilled trades, service workers, healthcare staff, and small business operators as much as it is a commuter suburb for corporate professionals.

Employment Within Azle

  • Azle ISD – Among the largest employers in the city, with over a thousand staff across 12 campuses
  • Texas Health Azle – The community hospital, with clinical, administrative, and support roles
  • City of Azle – Municipal government, public safety, public works, and utilities
  • Retail and grocery – The commercial corridor along SH 199 and Main Street
  • Skilled trades and contractors – A substantial small business base serving the surrounding area
  • Lake related businesses – Marinas, boat service, and seasonal recreation

Major Regional Employers Within Commuting Range

Aerospace and Defense

  • Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, west Fort Worth, one of the region's largest employers
  • Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base, roughly 14 miles from Azle, home to thousands of active duty, Reserve, Guard, and civilian personnel across commands from multiple service branches
  • Bell, with a significant Fort Worth area presence

Transportation and Logistics

  • American Airlines, headquartered in the DFW area
  • BNSF Railway, headquartered in Fort Worth
  • The Alliance corridor in north Fort Worth, a major distribution and logistics hub

Healthcare

  • Texas Health Resources, with facilities across the Metroplex including Azle
  • Cook Children's Health Care System, Fort Worth
  • Baylor Scott & White and JPS Health Network facilities in the region

Energy

  • Barnett Shale natural gas operations across the surrounding counties
  • Energy services, midstream, and related contracting

Government and Education

  • Tarrant County and Parker County government
  • City of Fort Worth
  • Multiple school districts and higher education institutions

Remote Work

Azle has become steadily more attractive to remote workers, for straightforward reasons: the housing dollar goes further, the lake is genuinely usable, and the connectivity is adequate. Before committing to a remote arrangement here, verify service at your specific address rather than at the city level. Broadband availability varies considerably between in town subdivisions and acreage properties, and the difference can be substantial. Section 9 covers providers.

Starting or Relocating a Business

For anyone bringing a business to Azle:

  • The Azle Area Chamber of Commerce is the practical first stop for local networking and referrals
  • The city maintains economic development resources for site selection and permitting questions
  • Texas has no state personal income tax, though businesses may be subject to the state franchise tax
  • Sales tax permitting is handled through the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts
  • Confirm which county your business address falls in for filing and permitting purposes

Businesses that need overflow room for inventory, equipment, records, or seasonal stock without committing to commercial lease terms often use business storage as a flexible alternative.

7. TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS

Driving Is the Default

Azle is a car dependent community without meaningful exception. Plan accordingly.

Major Routes:

  • SH 199, the Jacksboro Highway – The primary artery. Runs southeast from Azle toward Fort Worth as a freeway to near Lakeside, then as a divided highway through Lake Worth to a modified cloverleaf interchange at I‑820. Northwest, it continues toward Springtown and Jacksboro.
  • Interstate 820, Loop 820 – The Fort Worth loop, reached via SH 199, connecting to I‑35W, SH 183, and the wider highway network
  • FM 730 – The north south connector serving the Eagle Mountain Lake side and points north
  • FM 1886 – Local connector west of the city
  • Main Street and Southeast Parkway – The primary in town commercial corridors

Typical Drive Times in Normal Conditions:

  • Within Azle: 5 to 12 minutes to most destinations
  • To Lake Worth: 12 to 18 minutes
  • To NAS Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base: 15 to 22 minutes
  • To downtown Fort Worth: 20 to 30 minutes
  • To Alliance and north Fort Worth: 30 to 40 minutes
  • To DFW International Airport: 35 to 50 minutes
  • To downtown Dallas: 45 to 60 minutes
  • To Weatherford: 25 to 35 minutes

Traffic Realities

Azle's traffic problems are concentrated and predictable rather than constant:

  • The Lake Worth retail stretch of SH 199 is the main chokepoint. Heavy commercial development along the corridor combined with limited alternative routes across the water produces slow going through much of the daylight hours.
  • Loop 820 eastbound between SH 199 and I‑35W can add 10 to 20 minutes during the morning peak, with Monday mornings typically the worst.
  • Westbound evening return from Fort Worth between roughly 4:00 and 6:00 PM can add 10 to 15 minutes on heavy days.
  • Limited alternatives. There is no convenient parallel route when SH 199 has an incident. This is the practical cost of the geography.

Corridor improvements: TxDOT has a funded SH 199 widening project in design covering the stretch from FM 1886 toward the Azle Avenue and Merrett Drive area, aimed at capacity and safety. As with any highway project, expect construction period disruption before the benefit arrives. Check current TxDOT project status for schedules before assuming a timeline.

Public Transportation

Be direct about this: Azle has no commuter rail, no light rail, and no meaningful fixed route bus service. Trinity Metro's fixed route network serves Fort Worth proper and does not extend to Azle. The Trinity Railway Express and the TEXRail line both operate well east of here.

Practical implications:

  • A personal vehicle is required, not optional
  • A two adult household with different workplaces should plan on two vehicles
  • Teenagers will need transportation arrangements once school activities begin
  • Rideshare is available but coverage thins and wait times lengthen compared to the urban core
  • Households without a driver should think hard about whether Azle fits their situation

Air Travel

Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is the primary option, typically 35 to 50 minutes via SH 199 to I‑820 to SH 183 and on to the airport. Note that some approaches involve toll segments; if you avoid tolls, allow extra time.

Dallas Love Field (DAL) is a secondary option, generally an hour or more, and mainly relevant for specific carriers or fares.

Fort Worth Meacham International and other regional fields serve general aviation.

Biking and Walking

Azle is walkable in pockets rather than as a city. Central Park, the library, and parts of Main Street form a genuinely pleasant walkable cluster, and the parks have internal trail systems. Between neighborhoods, however, sidewalk coverage is inconsistent and SH 199 is not a pedestrian environment. Recreational cycling on the rural roads west and north of town is popular, but it is recreation rather than transportation.

Vehicle Registration and Licensing After You Move

Texas requires new residents to handle several items promptly after establishing residency:

  • Obtain a Texas driver license
  • Register your vehicles in Texas
  • Complete a Texas vehicle inspection before registration
  • Carry insurance meeting Texas minimum liability requirements
  • Submit proof of insurance and the vehicle identification number inspection where required

Because Azle sits in two counties, go to the tax assessor collector office for the county your residence is actually in. Driver license services are handled by the Texas Department of Public Safety at its own offices, which are separate from the county tax office. Appointments are strongly recommended and often fill weeks out, so book as soon as you have a firm move date. Deadlines and requirements change; confirm current rules with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Public Safety directly.

8. SELF STORAGE SOLUTIONS IN AZLE

Why Storage Matters During an Azle Move

Relocation rarely lines up neatly. Closings slip, leases end before the new place is ready, and the house you are moving out of shows better with a third of its contents somewhere else. Storage is the tool that absorbs that friction.

Common storage needs during an Azle relocation:

  • Bridging a gap between your move out date and your move in date
  • Decluttering a home before listing photos and showings
  • Holding furniture that does not fit the new floor plan while you decide
  • Storing belongings during a renovation on a newly purchased older home
  • Managing a military PCS transition, deployment, or on base housing change
  • Keeping lake and outdoor gear organized without surrendering the garage
  • Housing business inventory, tools, equipment, or archived records
  • Seasonal storage of items you use a few weeks a year

Be Honest With Yourself First: Do You Actually Need a Unit?

Not every move requires storage, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a unit you will resent in four months.

You probably do not need storage if:

  • Your closing dates line up and the new home is larger than the old one
  • You are moving into an Azle property with a garage, a shop, or a barn, which many here have
  • What you are considering storing is genuinely surplus, in which case selling or donating before the move saves you both moving costs and rent
  • You need it for a week, which is often better solved by a portable container or a friend's garage

Storage genuinely earns its cost when:

  • Your dates do not line up and you need somewhere secure for weeks or months
  • You are staging a home for sale and every square foot of visible clutter costs you
  • You are downsizing and need time to make decisions rather than making them under moving day pressure
  • You are between assignments and your household goods need a stable home
  • You have seasonal or recreational equipment that would otherwise crowd out a vehicle

10 Federal Storage Locations in and Around Azle

10 Federal Storage operates two locations inside Azle, plus additional facilities on either end of the SH 199 corridor. Between them, most of the greater Azle area is within a ten minute drive of a unit.

Azle — FM 730

11400 FM 730 N and 114 E Reno Rd, Azle, TX 76020
(817) 373-5838

Our north Azle location sits on the FM 730 corridor above town, which makes it the practical choice if you are coming from the north side of the city, Briar, Reno, Sanctuary, or the acreage properties spreading out toward Wise County. It is convenient to both SH 199 and the FM 730 connector, so it works whether you are heading into Fort Worth or out toward Boyd and Decatur.

See units and current pricing at our FM 730 location.

Azle — Sandy Beach Road

1250 Sandy Beach Rd, Azle, TX 76020
(817) 541-7860

Our Sandy Beach Road location sits on the lake side of Azle near Pelican Bay, close to Eagle Mountain Lake and the neighborhoods around it. If you are storing lake gear, clearing a garage in one of the shoreline neighborhoods, or moving into or out of a lakeside property, this is the closest option to the water.

See units and current pricing at our Sandy Beach Road location.

Springtown — Highway 199

1050 W. Hwy 199, Springtown, TX 76082
(817) 383-2311

About ten miles northwest of Azle on SH 199, our Springtown location serves the Parker County side of this market. It is worth knowing about if you are house hunting across both towns, if your commute runs northwest rather than into Fort Worth, or if you are moving to Azle from the Springtown, Poolville, or Weatherford direction and want somewhere to stage belongings closer to your origin.

See units and current pricing at our Springtown location.

Lake Worth — Paul Meador Road

3946 Paul Meador Rd, Lake Worth, TX 76135

Roughly ten miles southeast down SH 199, this facility is a straight shot along the same corridor most Azle residents already commute. It is worth considering if your daily drive takes you toward Fort Worth anyway, or if you want the specific features of a newer multi story building:

  • 786 units across three floors with nearly 77,000 square feet of net rentable space
  • Every unit is climate controlled – not a subset, not select buildings. Every unit on every floor is temperature regulated year round, which matters in North Texas where summer heat is the primary threat to stored belongings.
  • On site elevator access so upper floor units are practical for heavy or bulky items
  • Keypad gate entry with individual access codes
  • Security cameras and digital monitoring across the property
  • True 24/7 access, every day of the year
  • Month to month leases with no long term commitment

See units and current pricing at our Lake Worth facility, or browse the full Lake Worth area.

Which Location Makes Sense for You

Storage is one of the few services where proximity genuinely determines whether you use the thing you are paying for. A unit fifteen minutes out of your way turns into a unit you visit twice a year and resent monthly. Pick on drive time from the places you actually go.

  • North Azle, Briar, Reno, Sanctuary, or acreage north of town – FM 730
  • Lake side neighborhoods, Pelican Bay, or anything involving a boat – Sandy Beach Road
  • Springtown, Poolville, or a northwest commute – Springtown on Hwy 199
  • A daily commute toward Fort Worth, or a need for a newer multi story climate controlled building – Lake Worth on Paul Meador Rd

Features, unit sizes, and availability vary by location, so check the individual facility page or call the location directly before you plan around a specific unit size or amenity. You can also browse all 10 Federal Storage locations in Texas if your move spans more than one market.

Why Temperature Regulated Storage Matters in North Texas

North Texas summers are long and genuinely severe. Triple digit afternoons are routine, and the interior of an uninsulated metal storage building can climb far above the outdoor air temperature on those days. Sustained heat at that level is what damages stored belongings.

Items that benefit most from a temperature regulated unit:

  • Wood furniture, which can warp, split, and separate at glue joints under heat stress
  • Electronics, computers, and televisions
  • Photographs, documents, and printed material
  • Musical instruments
  • Vinyl records and media, which soften and deform in extreme heat
  • Candles, adhesives, and anything with a low melting point
  • Leather goods and upholstered furniture
  • Antiques, heirlooms, and collectibles
  • Artwork and framed pieces

For a general overview of what temperature regulated units do and when they are worth the difference in cost, see our climate controlled storage page.

Choosing the Right Unit Size

The most common mistake is renting too small, discovering it mid move, and having to solve the problem under time pressure. The second most common is renting too large because it felt safer.

Our storage unit size guide walks through this in more detail with realistic capacity examples. If you are also deciding on a rental truck, our moving truck size guide covers that separately.

Storing Boats, RVs, and Vehicles

Living near Eagle Mountain Lake means accumulating things that do not fit in a garage. Many Azle properties have room for a boat or trailer, but plenty do not, and some neighborhoods restrict what can be parked in view.

  • Boat storage for anything from kayaks and paddleboards to trailered runabouts
  • RV storage for motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels
  • Vehicle storage for a car, truck, or motorcycle during a deployment, an extended trip, or a transition

Availability of vehicle and oversized parking varies by facility, so confirm what is offered at a specific location before you plan around it.

Packing and Storing Well

A few practices that consistently pay off:

  • Label boxes on multiple sides, not just the top, since stacked boxes hide their tops
  • Keep an inventory list, ideally with photographs, and store a copy somewhere other than the unit
  • Leave a walkway down the center of the unit so you can reach the back without unloading the front
  • Put anything you might need sooner near the door
  • Elevate items off the floor on pallets or boards
  • Do not store food, plants, flammables, or anything perishable
  • Disassemble bed frames and tables, and bag the hardware taped to the piece it belongs to
  • Cover upholstered furniture with breathable material rather than sealing it in plastic

Our storage tips and moving tips resources cover this in depth.

Reserve Storage for Your Azle Move

If your dates do not line up, or you simply need somewhere secure while you sort out a new house, renting takes a few minutes.

Check availability at our two Azle locations — FM 730 on the north side and Sandy Beach Road near the lake — or look at Springtown to the northwest and Lake Worth to the southeast. Existing customers can manage payments and account details through the tenant portal.

9. UTILITIES AND SERVICES

Setting up utilities in Azle involves one genuine complication and several straightforward steps. Start with the complicated one, because it is the one that surprises people.

Electric Service: Read This Part Carefully

Texas has a deregulated retail electricity market in much of the state, which means residents choose their own retail electric provider while a separate regulated utility owns the poles and wires. But deregulation did not reach everywhere. Electric cooperatives largely opted out and continue to serve their members directly, with no retail choice.

Azle contains both. Depending on your specific address, you may be in:

  • Tri County Electric Cooperative territory – A member owned cooperative with a local presence on NW Parkway Street in Azle. If you are a co op member, you do not shop for a retail provider. You take service from the cooperative.
  • Oncor Electric Delivery territory – The regulated transmission and distribution utility for much of North Texas. If your address is served by Oncor, you choose a retail electric provider from a competitive market, and you can compare offers through the Public Utility Commission of Texas comparison site.

Why this matters practically:

  • Do not assume you can shop for a cheaper electricity rate until you have confirmed your address is in a deregulated area
  • Do not sign up with a retail provider before confirming, because they cannot serve a co op address
  • Two homes on different sides of the same street can be in different situations
  • Your seller, landlord, or builder will know which applies; ask them early
  • Rate comparison sites will happily quote you plans regardless, so verify independently

If you are in a deregulated area, compare on the total cost at your realistic usage level rather than on the advertised headline rate, and read the terms for contract length, early termination fees, and how the rate behaves at usage levels different from the advertised benchmark.

Regardless of which applies, note the outage reporting number for whichever utility physically serves your home, and keep it somewhere accessible that does not require internet access.

Natural Gas Service

Provider: Atmos Energy
Customer service: 888-286-6700
Gas emergency line: 866-322-8667

Atmos Energy is the natural gas distributor across this part of North Texas. Set up service several business days before your move in date. Bills are seasonal, running low through the summer and rising through winter heating months.

Program the emergency line into your phone when you move in. If you ever smell gas, leave the building first and call from outside.

Water, Sewer, Garbage, and Stormwater

Provider: City of Azle Utility Billing
City Hall: 505 W. Main Street, Azle, TX 76020

The City of Azle bills water, sewer, garbage, and stormwater together on a single monthly statement. Garbage service is established automatically when you set up water and wastewater service — you do not contract separately.

Setting Up Service:

  • Apply in person at City Hall or by email to the Utility Billing department
  • Provide photo identification and your signed lease or closing documents
  • Pay the required deposit and account setup fee
  • Residential deposits are lower for accounts inside the city limits than outside, and are reduced further if you enroll in the city's bank drafting program
  • A modest account initiation and setup fee applies to each new account

An Azle specific detail worth knowing: residential wastewater charges are re evaluated annually based on your water consumption during the winter billing months. The logic is that winter usage reflects indoor water use rather than irrigation, which gives a fairer basis for sewer charges than summer usage would. The practical consequence is that heavy water use during those winter months can raise your sewer charge for the following year. It is a reasonable system, but it catches people who do not know about it.

Note also that Texas law requires the city to keep customer usage and billing information confidential by default. You do not need to request it.

Trash and Recycling Collection

Provider: Community Waste Disposal, under contract to the City of Azle

  • Residential garbage collection twice weekly inside the city limits
  • Recycling collection once weekly
  • Containers must be at the curb by 7:00 AM on collection day
  • Containers may not be placed out earlier than 7:00 PM the evening before
  • Your collection schedule is provided when you establish water service
  • The city contract is exclusive within the city limits, so you cannot select a different hauler
  • Assistance service is available for residents with documented physical limitations that prevent carrying containers to the curb

Households outside the city limits arrange their own service, and rates differ.

Wells and Septic Systems

If your property is on well water and a septic system rather than city utilities — common on acreage around Azle — the setup process is entirely different. There is no account to open, but there are responsibilities:

  • Have the well tested before closing and periodically thereafter
  • Obtain septic system permitting records and inspection history
  • Understand your septic system type, since aerobic systems require ongoing maintenance contracts in Texas
  • Locate the tank, the lids, and the drain field, and keep a diagram
  • Budget for pumping on a regular cycle
  • Know that garbage service still must be arranged separately

Internet and Television

Availability in Azle varies more by address than in a dense suburb. Verify at your exact address before you commit, particularly if you work from home.

Providers active in the Azle area include:

  • AT&T, with fiber in parts of the area and other technologies elsewhere
  • Spectrum, cable internet and television
  • Frontier Communications
  • Verizon, including fixed wireless options
  • Satellite television through DISH and DIRECTV
  • Satellite internet, including low earth orbit service, which is a genuine option on rural acreage where wired service is poor

Speed Guidance:

  • Basic browsing and email: 25 to 50 Mbps
  • Streaming video: 50 to 150 Mbps
  • Multiple simultaneous users: 150 to 300 Mbps
  • Remote work with video calls, large file transfers, or gaming: 300 Mbps and up, with attention to upload speed

If you work remotely, ask specifically about upload speed and about any data caps. Download speed gets advertised; upload speed is what determines whether your video calls hold up.

Other Setup Items

  • Mail – File a change of address with the USPS, which can be done online
  • Voter registration – Register with the correct county, either Parker or Tarrant, depending on your address
  • Homestead exemption – File with the appraisal district covering your property after closing if it is your primary residence
  • Library – The Azle Memorial Library on West Main Street issues cards to area residents and runs programming for all ages
  • Emergency alerts – Enroll in the notification system for your county and city, which matters more here than in many places given severe weather season

10. HEALTHCARE FACILITIES IN AZLE

For a city its size, Azle is unusually well served for healthcare. Having a full hospital in town is not something most 15,000 person communities can claim, and it meaningfully changes the calculation for families with young children and for retirees.

Hospital and Emergency Care

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle
108 Denver Trail, Azle, TX 76020
Main: (817) 444-8600

Texas Health Azle has served this area since the early 1950s. It is a community hospital of roughly 36 licensed beds, and its emergency department covers one of the largest geographic service areas in the Metroplex, reaching across Tarrant, Parker, and Wise counties.

  • 24 hour emergency department
  • Designated by the state as a Level IV Trauma Center
  • Designated as a Level IV Support Stroke Facility
  • Joint Commission accreditation for disease specific chest pain care
  • Intensive care unit
  • Inpatient and outpatient surgery, including GI endoscopy
  • Advanced imaging including CT, MRI, digital mammography, and bone density
  • Cardiovascular services
  • Outpatient sports medicine and rehabilitation, including physical therapy, hand therapy, lymphedema treatment, and pelvic health

Understand what a Level IV designation means in practice: the hospital is equipped to evaluate, stabilize, and either treat or transfer. For major trauma or complex specialty care, patients are transferred to higher level facilities in Fort Worth. That is the intended design of a trauma system, not a shortcoming, but it is worth knowing before an emergency rather than during one.

Freestanding Emergency Centers

Azle also has a freestanding emergency center, which operates 24 hours and treats emergency level conditions outside a hospital campus.

One factual point worth understanding in advance: freestanding emergency centers are licensed and billed as emergency facilities, not as urgent care clinics, even when they are located in a retail setting and even for minor complaints. Insurance coverage and out of pocket cost can differ substantially from an urgent care visit. Whether a given facility is in network with your plan is a question worth answering before you need care, not in the waiting room. Contact your insurer directly for coverage specifics.

Higher Level and Specialty Care in Fort Worth

The full weight of the Fort Worth medical community sits 20 to 30 minutes away:

  • Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth
  • Cook Children's Medical Center, a major pediatric hospital
  • JPS Health Network, including the county's Level I trauma center
  • Baylor Scott & White facilities
  • Medical City Fort Worth
  • Extensive specialty practices across cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, neurology, and more

Primary and Routine Care

Azle supports a working base of primary care physicians, family practices, pediatric care, dentists, optometrists, and pharmacies along the Main Street and SH 199 corridors. Establishing care takes some lead time here, as in most places, so start the process when you arrive rather than when you first need an appointment.

Practical steps after your move:

  • Transfer prescriptions to a local pharmacy before your current supply runs out
  • Request medical and dental records from your previous providers before you leave
  • Verify which local providers and facilities are in network with your insurance plan
  • Establish with a primary care physician, which often requires calling several practices
  • Locate a veterinarian if you have pets, ideally before you need one
  • Update your address with your insurer, which can affect plan eligibility
  • Note the route to the emergency department before you need it

11. RECREATION AND ENTERTAINMENT

Eagle Mountain Lake

The lake is the centerpiece of recreation in Azle and the single largest quality of life factor for most residents. At nearly 8,700 surface acres, it is a genuine reservoir with open water, not a pond.

  • Powerboating, wakeboarding, and waterskiing on open water
  • Sailing, with an established sailing community on the lake
  • Kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding
  • Fishing for largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, and catfish
  • Public boat ramps and swim beaches at multiple parks
  • Marinas and lakeside dining along the shoreline
  • Sunset views that residents will tell you about unprompted

City Parks

Azle Parks and Recreation maintains over 85 acres of parkland.

Azle Central Park — 263 W Main St

  • Playground and splash pad
  • Amphitheater hosting concerts and community events
  • Skate park
  • Walking trail with exercise stations
  • Basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and soccer
  • Pavilion, gazebo, picnic areas, and restrooms
  • Adjacent to the Azle Memorial Library

Shady Grove Park — 1000 Stribling Dr N

  • Located near the shore of Eagle Mountain Lake
  • Public swimming beach
  • Fishing pier
  • Fully accessible playground
  • Walking trail and pavilion
  • Lake access without a private dock

Ash Creek Park — 605 Southeast Pkwy

  • One of the larger parks in the city
  • 18 hole disc golf course
  • Softball, tennis, and volleyball
  • Pavilion, picnic areas, and restrooms
  • Open space for informal play

Pelican Park — 1602 Liberty School Rd, Pelican Bay

  • Lakeside setting just outside Azle
  • Swim beach and playground
  • Picnic areas with water views

Regional Outdoor Destinations

  • Eagle Mountain Park – A Tarrant Regional Water District nature park with overlook trails above the lake. Open dawn to dusk. No camping, no campfires, and no personal motorized vehicles including golf carts and ATVs.
  • Twin Points Park – Lake access with a boat ramp and shoreline recreation
  • Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge – A large natural area with extensive trails, bison, and prairie and bottomland habitat, southeast of Azle
  • Cross Timbers Golf Course – Local golf in the Azle area

Community Events

The event calendar is a genuine part of Azle's identity, not a formality:

  • Sting Fling – The city's signature community festival, named for the Azle Hornets
  • Music in the Park – Free summer concert series on Friday evenings in May and June at Central Park
  • Follow the Flag – A patriotic community observance
  • Azle Lake Run – An annual running event
  • Azle Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade – A long standing holiday tradition
  • Eagle Mountain Lake Christmas Parade of Lights – Decorated boats on the water
  • Christmas on Main Street – Downtown holiday celebration
  • Truck or Treat – Halloween community event
  • Independence Day celebration at Central Park with food, music, and fireworks

Culture and Community Institutions

  • Azle Memorial Library – 333 W Main St. Programming for all ages including storytimes, teen gaming nights, LEGO club, and technology classes. Many programs do not require a library card.
  • Azle Historical Museum – Housed in the town's original 1920s brick schoolhouse
  • Senior Citizens Center – Operated through Parks and Recreation
  • Azle High School athletics and the Marching Green Pride – Friday nights here are a community event, not just a game

Dining and Shopping

Azle's commercial landscape is practical rather than expansive. You will find grocery stores, the familiar national chains, local barbecue and Tex‑Mex, lakeside restaurants, and a growing set of local coffee and casual spots along Main Street and SH 199.

For serious retail, varied dining, professional sports, and cultural venues, residents drive toward Fort Worth. The Lake Worth retail corridor along SH 199 handles most mid level shopping needs on the way in, and downtown Fort Worth, the Stockyards, the Cultural District museums, and Sundance Square are all within a half hour.

Day Trips Within Reach

  • Fort Worth Stockyards and the Cultural District – 25 to 35 minutes
  • Downtown Fort Worth and the Trinity Trails – 20 to 30 minutes
  • Weatherford and rural Parker County – 25 to 35 minutes
  • Possum Kingdom Lake – roughly 1 hour 15 minutes west
  • Dallas – 45 to 60 minutes
  • Mineral Wells and Lake Mineral Wells State Park – roughly 45 minutes

12. CLIMATE AND SEVERE WEATHER IN AZLE

North Texas weather is a genuine relocation consideration, particularly for anyone arriving from a milder climate. It is manageable, but it is not mild, and the failure mode for newcomers is being unprepared for the two or three days a year that actually matter.

The Seasonal Pattern

  • Summer – Long, hot, and intense. Triple digit afternoons are routine from roughly late June into September. Air conditioning is not optional and your summer electric bill will be your largest of the year.
  • Fall – Frequently the best season. Warm days, cool evenings, and comfortable outdoor conditions from October into early December.
  • Winter – Generally mild with periodic sharp cold snaps. Most winters bring a handful of hard freezes and occasional ice, and considerably more variability than a single average temperature suggests.
  • Spring – Pleasant and green, and also the core of severe weather season.

Severe Weather Season

Spring into early summer is the active period for severe thunderstorms across North Texas. Newcomers should take three things seriously:

Hail. This is the most common cause of property damage in the region by a wide margin. Large hail events damage roofs, vehicles, and outdoor equipment. Understand your homeowners policy deductible structure for wind and hail specifically, since it is frequently a percentage of the insured value rather than a flat dollar amount, and confirm whether your roof is covered at replacement cost or actual cash value.

Tornadoes. North Texas is squarely within the region where tornadoes occur. Most homes here have no basement. Identify your interior shelter location — typically an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows — on your first day, not during a warning. Learn the difference between a watch and a warning, and have more than one way to receive alerts, including one that works without power or internet.

Ice storms. Less frequent than hail but more disruptive when they happen. North Texas infrastructure and drivers handle ice poorly. Expect school closures, road hazards, and the real possibility of extended power outages. Keep basic supplies on hand.

Grid Reliability

Texas operates its own electric grid through ERCOT, largely separate from the two national interconnections. Grid performance during extreme weather events has been a significant topic of public attention in recent years. Practically, this means the same preparation you would want anywhere subject to storms: a plan for extended outages, a way to charge devices, and enough supplies to be self sufficient for several days. This is prudent preparation, not alarm.

Flooding and Drainage

North Texas rainfall arrives in intense bursts rather than steady drizzle, and flash flooding along creeks is a real hazard. Ash Creek, Silver Creek, and Walnut Creek run through the Azle area.

  • Check the flood zone designation for any property you are considering
  • Standard homeowners policies do not cover flood damage; that requires separate coverage
  • Note that flood risk is not limited to designated flood zones
  • Never drive into water across a road, which is the leading cause of flood fatalities

Soil Movement and Foundations

North Texas clay soils expand when wet and contract when dry. Over the seasonal cycle this produces foundation movement, which is the single most common structural issue in regional home inspections. It is normal, it is manageable, and it is worth understanding:

  • Have a thorough foundation assessment during your inspection period
  • Once you own the home, water the foundation perimeter during extended dry periods, which sounds odd to newcomers and is standard practice here
  • Maintain drainage away from the structure
  • Keep large trees at a reasonable distance from the foundation
  • Note that minor cosmetic cracking is common and is not automatically a structural problem

A Note on the Azle Area Earthquakes

If you research Azle online you will encounter alarming headlines about earthquakes, and you deserve accurate context rather than either dismissal or alarm.

Between November 2013 and January 2014, the Azle and Reno area experienced a swarm of small earthquakes — researchers monitored 27 events of magnitude 2.0 or greater over roughly 84 days. The area had no recorded earthquakes for approximately 150 years prior. A study led by Southern Methodist University with the U.S. Geological Survey, published in the journal Nature Communications, concluded that high volume wastewater injection combined with brine extraction from natural gas production was the most likely cause. Shaking diminished as injection volumes decreased.

The Railroad Commission of Texas, which regulates oil and gas activity in the state, adopted stricter disposal well rules in 2014 and its staff seismologist stated at the time that the swarm had subsided. Subsequent seismicity in the broader region has been studied extensively as part of a wider pattern of induced seismicity across Texas and Oklahoma.

What this means for a prospective resident, stated plainly: this was a decade old event involving small magnitude quakes, it subsided, and it is not a present daily concern for Azle residents. It is also a real part of the area's recent history, connected to the Barnett Shale gas activity that surrounds this part of North Texas, and it is reasonable to want current information. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains public earthquake data, and the Railroad Commission publishes current seismicity and disposal well information. If this matters to your decision, consult those sources directly for the current picture rather than relying on 2014 headlines or on this article.

What the Climate Means for Your Belongings

The practical storage consequence of a North Texas summer is heat. Sustained high temperatures inside an unregulated space are what damage wood furniture, electronics, media, artwork, and instruments. A temperature regulated unit addresses that specific risk. Climate controlled availability varies by facility, so if you are storing anything heat sensitive, confirm it for the specific location you are considering before you rent.

14. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MOVING TO AZLE

Azle suits people who want space, a lakeside setting, and a small town pace within commuting distance of Fort Worth. It offers larger lots and lower housing costs than the inner ring suburbs, a community hospital, and access to Eagle Mountain Lake. The tradeoffs are a longer commute, near total car dependence, and modest local retail and dining.

Azle sits in both Parker County and Tarrant County. Your specific address determines which one you are in, and that affects your appraisal district, property tax rate, vehicle registration office, and voter registration. Confirm the county in writing before making an offer on a home, since the Azle mailing address alone does not tell you.

Azle is about 20 miles northwest of downtown Fort Worth, typically a 20 to 30 minute drive via State Highway 199, also called the Jacksboro Highway. Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base is closer at roughly 14 miles. DFW International Airport generally takes 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic and route.

Azle Independent School District serves the city along with Lakeside, Reno, Pelican Bay, and Sanctuary. The district enrolls roughly 7,200 students across 12 campuses and reaches into Tarrant, Parker, and Wise counties. Its student to teacher ratio is about 15 to 1, and reading and math proficiency both run above the Texas state average.

Yes. Azle ISD approved revised attendance zones in December 2025 that take effect for the 2026 to 2027 school year, alongside a grade reconfiguration moving all elementary campuses to Pre‑K through 5 and junior highs to grades 6 through 8. Verify any home's current assignment directly with the district, since listings and school rating sites often lag boundary changes.

Azle's overall cost of living sits slightly below the national average, with recent composite index readings around 98 where 100 is the national average. Housing runs below the Dallas–Fort Worth core. Transportation costs run higher than average in practice, because there is no transit alternative and most residents drive substantial daily mileage.

Different sites report different measures. Median sale price reflects what homes actually closed at and has recently run in the low $300,000s. Median list price reflects current asking prices and runs far higher, pulled up by Eagle Mountain Lake waterfront inventory. Some national portals also return radius results that include Fort Worth neighborhoods outside Azle entirely.

Texas has no state income tax and funds schools and local government largely through property taxes, which are correspondingly higher than in many states. Because Azle spans two counties, your rate depends on your address and the overlapping jurisdictions that tax it. Rates are set annually, so confirm current figures with the appraisal district covering your property and consult a tax professional about your situation.

It depends on your address. Parts of Azle are served by Tri County Electric Cooperative, a member owned co op where you take service directly and cannot shop for a retail provider. Other parts are in Oncor delivery territory, where Texas retail choice applies and you select your own provider. Confirm which applies before signing up with any retail electric company.

The City of Azle bills water, sewer, garbage, and stormwater together on one monthly statement, and garbage service is established automatically when you open water service. Apply at City Hall at 505 W. Main Street with photo identification and your lease or closing documents. A deposit and account setup fee apply, both reduced for accounts inside the city limits.

Yes. Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle at 108 Denver Trail is a community hospital of roughly 36 licensed beds with a 24 hour emergency department, an intensive care unit, surgery, and advanced imaging. It is designated a Level IV Trauma Center and Level IV Support Stroke Facility, and its emergency service area spans Tarrant, Parker, and Wise counties.

No. Azle has no commuter rail, no light rail, and no meaningful fixed route bus service. Trinity Metro serves Fort Worth proper and does not extend here. A personal vehicle is required, and households with two working adults commuting to different workplaces should plan on two vehicles.

Azle is in North Texas, where spring into early summer brings an active severe weather season. Large hail is the most common cause of property damage in the region. Tornadoes occur, and most homes here have no basement, so identify an interior room on the lowest floor away from windows when you move in. Winter ice storms are less frequent but highly disruptive.

Between November 2013 and January 2014, the Azle and Reno area experienced a swarm of small earthquakes, with 27 events of magnitude 2.0 or greater recorded over roughly 84 days. Research led by Southern Methodist University with the U.S. Geological Survey linked the swarm to wastewater injection from natural gas production. The activity subsided, and Texas regulators adopted stricter disposal well rules in 2014.

Eagle Mountain Lake anchors recreation with nearly 8,700 acres of open water for boating, sailing, paddling, and fishing. The city maintains over 85 acres of parkland including Central Park with a splash pad and amphitheater, Ash Creek Park with an 18 hole disc golf course, and Shady Grove Park with a swim beach and fishing pier. Community events run year round.

Texas requires new residents to obtain a Texas driver license, register their vehicles, complete a state vehicle inspection, and carry insurance meeting Texas minimums. Driver licenses are handled by the Department of Public Safety, while vehicle registration goes through your county tax office, either Parker or Tarrant depending on your address. Book appointments early, as they often fill weeks out.

10 Federal Storage operates two locations in Azle: FM 730 on the north side at 11400 FM 730 N, and Sandy Beach Road at 1250 Sandy Beach Rd near Eagle Mountain Lake. Additional locations serve the corridor at Highway 199 in Springtown and Paul Meador Road in Lake Worth. Unit sizes, features, and availability vary by location.

Storage makes sense when your move out and move in dates do not align, when you are staging a home for sale, when you are downsizing and want time to make decisions, or when a renovation is underway. It is less useful if your dates line up cleanly and your new home has a garage or shop, which many Azle properties do.

As a general guide, 5x5 and 5x10 units hold boxes, seasonal items, and the contents of a single room. 10x10 and 10x15 units suit a one or two bedroom household including appliances and larger furniture. 10x20 and larger units handle three to four bedroom homes or business inventory. Our storage unit size guide covers this in more detail.

WELCOME TO AZLE

Congratulations on choosing Azle. This guide has covered the practical ground of relocating to the northwest corner of the Metroplex, including the parts most relocation content skips.

What Azle offers:

✓ A genuine lake — nearly 8,700 acres of open water minutes from home
✓ More square footage and more land per dollar than the inner ring suburbs
✓ A real small town with a real Main Street and events people actually attend
✓ Fort Worth employment inside a reasonable commute
✓ A community hospital in a city of 15,000
✓ A school district with strong athletics, CTE pathways, and a JROTC program
✓ No state income tax in Texas
✓ Over 85 acres of parkland and access to regional natural areas

And what it asks in return: you will drive, your commute will be longer than it would be closer in, and you will trade some convenience for space and water. Most people who move here decide that trade was worth making.

As you settle in, get on the water early. It is the thing residents consistently say they wish they had done sooner, and it is the reason most of them are still here.

10 Federal Storage is here to help with the logistics of your move, with two locations right here in Azle plus additional facilities in Springtown and Lake Worth, flexible month to month terms, and online rentals.
