Packing Tips to Make Every Box Count

  • Pack heavy items in small boxes: Books, tools, and canned goods belong in small boxes only. A large box full of books can exceed 80 lbs — a back injury risk and a guaranteed box-bottom blowout.
  • Fill every box completely: Half-filled boxes collapse under weight during transit. Fill voids with packing paper, rolled T-shirts, or towels. A full box won't crush — and it's easier to stack.
  • Wrap fragile items individually: One layer of bubble wrap or three sheets of packing paper per item. Don't stack plates flat — pack them on their edge like records. Cushion the bottom and top of the box with crumpled paper.
  • Label every box on the top AND the side: Movers read labels from the side when boxes are stacked. Mark the destination room, a rough contents summary, and whether the box is fragile — on at least two sides.
  • Start with rooms you use least: Guest rooms, storage closets, and seasonal items go first. The kitchen and master bedroom are packed last — you need them until moving day.
