You are probably here for one of three reasons. You are about to buy an RV and you want to know whether it will fit in your driveway. You already own one and something (a campground reservation, an HOA letter, a low bridge on a route you have been avoiding) has made its exact size suddenly urgent. Or you are trying to rent storage for it and the size chart on the facility website does not match the numbers on your registration.
Most RV size guides answer the first question and stop. They publish a range for each class, tell you the average RV is somewhere between 20 and 40 feet long, and move on. That is technically accurate and practically useless, because the number that actually determines where your RV can go is rarely the one on the brochure.
This guide gives you the full dimensional picture for every RV type (length, width, height, and the fourth measurement almost nobody takes) and then does the part other guides skip. It works out the arithmetic between your RV’s real dimensions and the actual openings it has to pass through: a storage unit door, a covered parking canopy, a campground pad, a tunnel. That arithmetic is where the surprises live.
It is also going to tell you something most storage companies will not, which is that the majority of RVs do not fit inside a standard enclosed storage unit and no amount of choosing a longer unit will change that. The constraint is the door, not the floor. We will show the numbers.
Finally, a note on emphasis. Nearly every RV size guide online leads with the Class A motorhome, because a 45-foot diesel pusher makes a better photograph than a 26-foot travel trailer. Industry shipment data says that is backwards. Travel trailers are the overwhelming majority of what Americans actually buy, and this guide is weighted accordingly.

The Four Measurements That Decide Where Your RV Can Go
Every RV size guide covers three dimensions: length, width, and height. Those are the right three, and we will cover them thoroughly. But there is a fourth measurement that almost never appears in a size chart and that causes more real-world problems than the other three combined.
Here is the full set, in the order they will actually cause you trouble.
- Overall length. Not the model number, not the “box” length, not the floor plan number. The distance from the furthest forward point of the rig to the furthest rearward point, including the tongue on a towable, the spare tire, the bike rack, and the ladder. This is the number campgrounds mean and the number storage facilities mean.
- Overall height. Measured from the ground to the top of whatever is highest, which is essentially never the roofline. Rooftop air conditioners, vent covers, satellite domes, and solar mounts sit above it. This is the number that decides bridges, canopies, garage doors, and drive-up storage units.
- Overall width. The widest fixed point of the body with slides retracted, and separately the widest point including mirrors and awning rails. Two different numbers for two different purposes.
- Turning and swing radius. The measurement nobody takes. How much clear space you need to get the rig into a position, not just how much space it occupies once parked. A 32-foot travel trailer might sit comfortably in a 40-foot space and still be impossible to back into if the drive aisle is narrow, because you need room to swing the tongue.
The first three are printed somewhere. The fourth you have to think about. Most people discover it on the day they try to park.
Everything that follows in this guide is built around those four numbers. The size chart in the next section gives you the ranges by type. The sections after that explain where each range comes from, why manufacturer figures are systematically short, and how to get your own real numbers in about fifteen minutes with a tape measure.
Average RV Dimensions at a Glance: The Full Size Chart
Here is the complete dimensional picture across every major RV type. Read these as ranges covering the great majority of models on the road, not as maximums. Specialty and custom builds sit outside them in both directions.
Length figures below are body or overall length as manufacturers typically state them. Height figures are to the highest fixed structural point and exclude rooftop equipment, which is how manufacturers publish them and which is exactly why so many people misjudge clearance. Add eight to twelve inches to any height number here before you plan around it.
Motorized RVs

Three things worth noticing in that list before you go any further.
Width is nearly constant. Almost every RV built for U.S. roads lands between 7 and 8.5 feet wide, because a federal standard effectively caps it. Width is the one dimension you can mostly predict without looking it up. It is also, counterintuitively, the dimension most likely to disqualify you from an enclosed storage unit, for reasons we will get to.
Height clusters into two bands. Vans and small towables run under about 11 feet. Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels run 12 to 13.5 feet. There is not much in between, and the gap matters enormously for storage and clearance.
Length varies more than anything else, by a factor of five across the category. It is also the dimension people quote most confidently and measure least accurately, because the model number is usually wrong.
How Long Are RVs? Average Length by Type
The honest headline answer: most RVs on American roads are between 20 and 35 feet long, and the single most common configuration is a conventional travel trailer somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties. The full span of the category runs from about 8 feet for a small teardrop to 45 feet for the largest Class A motorhomes.
Averages across all RV types are not especially useful, though, because the category contains a folding trailer you could park in a single-car garage and a diesel pusher longer than a city bus. The type-level numbers are what you want.
Length by type, shortest to longest
- Teardrop trailers: 8–14 feet. The shortest RVs made. Many tow behind a mid-size sedan.
- Truck campers: 8–20 feet of camper body, but the relevant figure is the total length of the truck with the camper mounted, usually 20–24 feet.
- Pop-up campers: 8–16 feet towing, 16–23 feet with the beds extended at camp. The gap between those two numbers is the entire point of the design.
- Class B camper vans: 17–24 feet. Built on commercial van chassis, which is why they cluster so tightly.
- Conventional travel trailers: 12–35 feet of body, plus 3–5 feet of A-frame tongue. A trailer sold as 26 feet is commonly 29 to 31 feet overall.
- Class C motorhomes: 20–35 feet. The cab-over bunk is what distinguishes them visually, and it adds nothing to length, since it sits above the cab, not in front of it.
- Class A motorhomes: 26–45 feet. Gas models cluster between 26 and 35 feet; diesel pushers occupy the top of the range.
- Fifth wheels: 22–42 feet of trailer body, plus 3–5 feet of kingpin overhang that sits over the truck bed and does not appear in the stated length.
- Toy haulers: 18–44 feet, available as both travel trailers and fifth wheels. The garage section makes these the longest towables in common use.
A note on a number you will see repeated
You will find sources claiming Class C motorhomes run 20 to 23 feet. That figure appears to be a transcription error propagating between sites. At least one major storage operator’s guide states 20 to 23 feet in its length section while its own summary, comparison chart, and FAQ on the same page all say 20 to 33 feet. The wider range is correct. Class C motorhomes above 30 feet are common, and if you are sizing a parking space or checking a campground limit against a 20-to-23-foot assumption you will come up badly short.
This is a good illustration of why you should verify your own rig’s numbers rather than working from a class average. Class averages are for orientation. Your registration, your VIN decoder, and your tape measure are for decisions.
How Wide Is an RV? The 102-Inch Rule Explained
Almost every RV built for U.S. roads is between 96 and 102 inches wide, or 8 feet to 8 feet 6 inches. Smaller towables and van-based rigs run narrower, down to about 6 feet for a teardrop, but nothing in mainstream production goes wider than 102 inches. That consistency is not a coincidence and it is not a design convention. It is a regulatory ceiling.
Where the 102-inch figure comes from
Federal regulation at 23 CFR Part 658, administered by the Federal Highway Administration, establishes 102 inches as the width standard on the National Network of highways. The rule is written from the other direction than most people expect: states are barred from imposing a width limit of more or less than 102 inches on vehicles operating on that network. Hawaii is the single exception, permitted to keep a 108-inch maximum.
That standard originated with the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982, which raised the ceiling from 96 inches and expanded the network it applied to. Manufacturers build to it because a vehicle wider than 102 inches becomes an oversize load requiring permits, which is not a viable product for a recreational buyer.
What does not count toward the width
The regulation excludes certain appurtenances from the width measurement. The category is defined as devices that are not designed or used to carry cargo. Mirrors and specified safety devices fall outside the measured width, with the allowable projection limited to a few inches per side.
This exclusion is legally convenient and practically misleading, and it is worth understanding the difference:
- For legal road width, your mirrors generally do not count. A trailer measuring 102 inches at the body is compliant even though the tow vehicle’s extended mirrors reach wider.
- For every physical opening you have to pass through, your mirrors absolutely count. A gate, a canopy support, a storage unit door, and a tunnel do not read the regulation. They measure the widest thing on your vehicle.
Keep two width numbers. The legal one for compliance, and the real one (mirror tip to mirror tip, or awning rail to awning rail, whichever is wider) for everything else.
Width by RV type
- Teardrop trailers: 5–7 feet. The only RVs meaningfully narrower than a standard lane vehicle.
- Class B camper vans: 6.5–8 feet. Built on van bodies, so they inherit commercial van width.
- Pop-up campers: 7–8 feet closed.
- Truck campers: 7–8 feet, though the widest point is often the camper’s overhang past the truck bed rails.
- Conventional travel trailers: 7–8.5 feet, with anything above about 24 feet of body length almost always at the 96-to-102-inch maximum.
- Class C motorhomes: 8–8.5 feet.
- Class A motorhomes: 8–8.5 feet, effectively always at or near 102 inches.
- Fifth wheels and toy haulers: 8–8.5 feet, effectively always at or near 102 inches.
The practical takeaway is that width is the dimension you can most safely assume. If you own anything larger than a small travel trailer, plan around 102 inches of body and add whatever your mirrors and awning hardware contribute. If you tow with a dually pickup, the truck’s rear axle is often the widest point of the whole combination.
How Tall Is an RV? Why the Brochure Height Is Wrong
Most RVs stand between 9 and 13.5 feet tall. Vans and small towables sit at the bottom of that band; Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels sit at the top, often within inches of 13.5 feet.
Height is the dimension that causes catastrophic rather than inconvenient failures. Misjudge length and you get turned away from a campsite. Misjudge width and you scrape a gatepost. Misjudge height and you take the roof off against an overpass or a canopy, and the repair bill starts at the air conditioner and works down through the roof membrane into the framing.
The systematic error in every spec sheet
Manufacturers publish height to the highest fixed structural point of the vehicle, the roofline. That is a defensible way to measure and it is the industry convention. It is also not the height of your RV.
Sitting above that roofline on most rigs:
- Rooftop air conditioner shrouds: commonly 8 to 14 inches. Low-profile units are shorter; high-capacity and ducted units are taller. On a two-AC coach, both matter, because the taller one is your height.
- Roof vent covers: 3 to 6 inches for the domed aftermarket covers that let you run a fan in the rain.
- Satellite domes: 6 to 14 inches depending on the model.
- Antennas, both crank-up and fixed: a few inches when stowed, considerably more if you forget to crank one down.
- Solar panels and their mounting rails: 2 to 5 inches, and increasingly common as factory equipment.
- Roof racks, ladders, and cargo boxes: highly variable, occasionally the tallest thing up there.
The practical rule is to add at least a foot to any published height figure and then confirm it with a tape measure. If your brochure says 11 feet 6 inches, plan around 12 feet 6 inches until you have measured, and treat the measured number as authoritative from then on.
Height by RV type
- Teardrop trailers: 4.5–7 feet. Many will clear a residential garage door.
- Pop-up campers, collapsed: under 5 feet. The most garage-compatible towable made, and the only category where a standard drive-up storage unit is genuinely realistic.
- Class B camper vans: 7.5–10 feet. High-roof models with rooftop AC push the upper end; low-roof conversions are the only motorized RVs that routinely fit a residential garage.
- Conventional travel trailers: 9–11.5 feet to the roofline, so 10–12.5 feet realistically.
- Class C motorhomes: 10–12 feet to the roofline, so 11–13 feet realistically.
- Toy haulers: 11–13.5 feet, taller in fifth-wheel configurations.
- Class A motorhomes: 12–13.5 feet to the roofline. Many are within an inch or two of the practical ceiling before you add anything.
- Fifth wheels: 12–13.5 feet. The raised front bedroom section is what puts them in the same band as Class A coaches despite being towables.
Why 13 feet 6 inches keeps appearing
You will see 13’6” treated as a national height limit. It is more accurate to describe it as the design convention the trucking industry builds to and the height most modern interstate structures are engineered to clear with margin. Federal design standards for the interstate system target a substantially higher minimum vertical clearance than the vehicles themselves, which is why a 13’6” rig can cross the country on interstates without incident.
The trouble is not the interstate. It is everything else: older state and county roads, railroad underpasses, historic bridges, urban structures, drive-through canopies at gas stations and banks, parking garages, and the entrance to a campground built in 1968. Those were not designed to any modern standard and many are posted lower than 12 feet. Route planning software configured with your true height is worth more than any single number you could memorize.
Class A Motorhome Dimensions
The Class A is the bus-shaped one: a flat front, a full-width windshield, and a body built on a heavy commercial chassis. It is the largest RV in common use and the one every size guide leads with, which slightly overstates how many people own one.

The two sub-categories that matter for sizing
Gas Class A coaches are built on a front-engine chassis and cluster between 26 and 36 feet. They are the more common configuration by unit volume and the more realistic one for someone who intends to visit public campgrounds.
Diesel pushers put the engine at the rear on a heavier chassis and occupy the top of the range, 36 to 45 feet. Almost everything above 40 feet is a diesel pusher. These are the rigs that run into length limits most often: at campgrounds, on scenic byways, and in a handful of states where the single-vehicle cap sits at 45 feet with no margin above it.
What the Class A length figure includes
Manufacturer length for a motorhome is generally measured bumper to bumper and is more honest than towable length figures, which is a low bar but worth acknowledging. The complications are at the ends:
- Rear-mounted accessories. Bike racks, cargo carriers, and spare tire mounts extend past the rear bumper and are not in the published number.
- Towed vehicle. If you flat-tow a car behind the coach, your combination length is the coach plus the tow bar plus the car, commonly another 18 to 22 feet. Many campground and road limits are written against combination length, not coach length.
- Model naming. A coach with a model number containing 37 is usually close to 37 feet, but manufacturers are not consistent about whether that number reflects floor plan length or overall length. Check the spec sheet.
Where Class A size becomes a problem
At 12 to 13.5 feet tall before rooftop equipment, a Class A has essentially no realistic prospect of fitting in an enclosed self storage unit. Standard drive-up units are built with roll-up door openings in the seven-to-eight-foot range, and the very tallest specialty units at most facilities still fall well short of what a Class A needs. This is not a matter of finding a longer unit. Outdoor or covered parking is the practical option, and at 26 to 45 feet you are looking at a 35-to-50-foot space once you allow room to maneuver.
Class A owners also encounter the tightest campground restrictions. A significant share of public campground sites cannot accommodate anything above the mid-thirties, and the sites that can tend to book earliest.
Class B Camper Van Dimensions
The Class B is a camper built inside a van body rather than on a purpose-built chassis. Confusingly, it is the smallest motorized class despite sitting alphabetically between A and C. It is also the only motorized RV that a meaningful number of owners keep at home.
Class B dimensions at a glance: 17–24 feet long · 6.5–8 feet wide · 7.5–10 feet tall · roughly 6,000–11,000 pounds · 160–350 square feet of interior space, with interior standing height typically 6 to 6.5 feet.
The height split that determines everything
Class B vans divide sharply into two groups, and which group yours is in matters more than any other spec:
- Low-roof and pop-top conversions at roughly 7.5 to 8.5 feet. These clear many residential garage doors and are the only motorized RVs with a realistic chance of fitting an oversized enclosed storage unit, and even then only after you have measured the specific door.
- High-roof conversions at roughly 9 to 10 feet, which is most modern factory-built Class B units. A high-roof van with rooftop air conditioning is a 10-foot vehicle and will not fit a standard residential garage or a standard drive-up storage unit.
If you see a storage size guide recommending a large drive-up unit for a Class B motorhome, check its own height figures against a typical drive-up door opening before you act on it. At least one major operator publishes both numbers on the same page without reconciling them, and the recommendation does not survive the comparison.
Practical notes on Class B sizing
At 17 to 24 feet, a Class B occupies roughly the footprint of a full-size pickup with a long bed. It parks in an ordinary parking space in most cases, though it will overhang. It is the only RV class where the honest advice is frequently that you do not need to rent storage at all. If your driveway and your HOA allow it, a Class B is small enough to keep at home without the friction that a 34-foot fifth wheel creates.
Where Class B owners do rent storage, it is usually about the HOA rather than the space, and a standard parking space rather than an enclosed unit is the normal answer.
Class C Motorhome Dimensions
The Class C is built on a cutaway truck or van chassis with the original cab intact and a coach body behind it. The cab-over bunk that hangs above the windshield is the defining feature and the easiest way to identify one from a distance.

As noted earlier, you will encounter published figures capping Class C length at 23 feet. Treat those with suspicion. Class C coaches in the 28-to-32-foot range are extremely common, and several popular models exceed 33 feet. The 20-to-35-foot range above reflects what is actually sold.
Sub-categories worth knowing
- Compact or “B+” Class C: 20–24 feet, often on a van cutaway chassis. These blur the line with Class B and are the most campground-flexible motorized option.
- Standard Class C: 25–31 feet, on a truck cutaway chassis. The volume seller.
- Super C: 33–40 feet on a medium-duty commercial chassis. These are Class C in body configuration only. In size and weight they behave like Class A coaches, and they should be sized as such.
Class C height is the underrated risk
A Class C at 10 to 12 feet to the roofline feels smaller than a Class A and often is, by several feet of length. Height does not scale down proportionally. Add a rooftop air conditioner and a vent cover to an 11-foot-6 coach and you are at 12 feet 6 inches or more, which is inside the same clearance-risk band as a Class A.
The cab-over bunk is also frequently the highest point on smaller Class C models, not the main roof, which surprises people who measure at the rear.
For storage, the Class C sits in an awkward middle. Too tall for any enclosed unit, but short enough at the compact end that a 30-foot parking space is often sufficient. Owners of Super C coaches should size as though they own a Class A.
Travel Trailer Dimensions: The Size Most People Actually Own
If you are reading a general RV size guide, this is statistically the section that applies to you. Conventional travel trailers are the dominant product in the category by a wide margin. Not a plurality, a supermajority. Section 18 has the shipment figures.

The tongue problem
This is the single most important thing to understand about travel trailer dimensions, and it is where most sizing mistakes originate.
Manufacturers commonly state travel trailer length as body length: the box, measured from the front wall to the rear bumper. The A-frame tongue that extends forward to the coupler is not in that figure. Neither, typically, are the propane tanks mounted on the A-frame, the battery box, or a front-mounted generator rack.
That tongue adds three to five feet. So:
- A trailer sold as a 22-footer is commonly 25 to 27 feet overall.
- A trailer sold as a 26-footer is commonly 29 to 31 feet overall.
- A trailer sold as a 32-footer is commonly 35 to 37 feet overall.
Campgrounds, parking spaces, and storage facilities all mean overall length. If you booked a 30-foot campsite for your “28-foot” trailer, you may not fit.
Some manufacturers now publish overall length alongside body length, and some model numbers reflect one while the marketing copy reflects the other. There is no universal convention. Measure it yourself once and write the number down.
Travel trailer size tiers
- Compact / ultralight, 12–19 feet body: Single axle, often under 3,500 pounds, towable by many SUVs and half-ton trucks. These fit the widest range of campgrounds and are the easiest to store. Overall length usually 16–23 feet.
- Mid-size, 20–27 feet body: The volume segment. Usually dual axle, one or two slides, 4,000–7,000 pounds. Overall length usually 24–32 feet.
- Large, 28–35 feet body: Multiple slides, bunk rooms, outdoor kitchens. 7,000–10,500 pounds and requiring a properly rated tow vehicle. Overall length usually 32–40 feet.
Height and width notes
Travel trailers above roughly 24 feet of body length are almost always built at or near the 102-inch width maximum. Below that, ultralight models narrow to 7 or 7.5 feet, which is a meaningful advantage for towing stability with a smaller vehicle.
Height runs 9 to 11.5 feet to the roofline. Add a foot for equipment. A large travel trailer at 11 feet 6 inches plus a rooftop air conditioner is a 12-foot-6 vehicle, which puts it in the same clearance conversation as a fifth wheel despite being noticeably shorter in profile.
Fifth-Wheel Dimensions and the Kingpin Overhang
A fifth wheel hitches to a plate mounted in a pickup bed rather than to a ball behind the bumper. That geometry gives it better towing manners than a travel trailer of similar length, and it produces a distinctive raised front section that houses the primary bedroom.

The overhang that is not in the length
Fifth wheels have their own version of the tongue problem, and it works differently. The stated length typically covers the trailer body. The kingpin overhang, the portion of the nose that extends forward over the truck bed, adds another three to five feet to the actual combination.
The practical consequences:
- For combination length, add the overhang. A 34-foot fifth wheel behind a long-bed crew cab is a 55-to-60-foot combination, which is at or near several states’ combination caps.
- For a storage space, measure to the front of the kingpin overhang, not to the front wall of the body. The trailer sits in the space unhitched, with the nose supported by the landing gear, and the overhang occupies real space.
- For maneuvering, the pivot point is over the truck’s rear axle rather than behind the bumper, which makes a fifth wheel considerably easier to back but changes where the trailer sweeps during the turn.
Why fifth wheels are the tallest towables
That raised front section puts fifth wheels in the 12-to-13.5-foot band alongside Class A motorhomes, and often at the very top of it. A fifth wheel is commonly one and a half to two feet taller than a travel trailer of identical stated length.
This has one pleasant consequence and one unpleasant one. The pleasant one is genuine standing headroom in the front bedroom, typically 6.5 to 7 feet. The unpleasant one is that fifth wheels are the towable most likely to run into a clearance problem: at a canopy, a covered storage structure, or an older bridge. If you own a fifth wheel and you have not measured it to the top of the air conditioner, that is the highest-value fifteen minutes available to you.
Pop-Up Camper and Folding Trailer Dimensions
The pop-up, or folding camping trailer, is the one RV type with two completely different sets of dimensions depending on whether it is deployed. That duality is the whole design premise and it makes pop-ups uniquely storable.

Why the collapsed height matters so much
At under five feet tall in the towing position, a pop-up is shorter than most SUVs. That single number puts it in a category no other RV occupies:
- It clears essentially every bridge, canopy, and drive-through in the country.
- It fits under many residential garage doors.
- It is the one RV type that genuinely fits inside a standard enclosed drive-up storage unit, because it is the one RV type shorter than the door.
A collapsed pop-up at, say, 14 feet long, 7 feet 6 inches wide, and 4 feet 8 inches tall will fit through a typical drive-up unit door with clearance on every axis. That is not true of anything else in this guide except a small teardrop.
Two cautions
Measure your specific unit collapsed. Some larger folding trailers and hard-sided A-frame campers sit above five feet closed, particularly with a roof-mounted air conditioner or a cargo rack. An air conditioner on a pop-up roof can add a foot to a vehicle whose entire selling point is being short.
The tongue counts here too. Pop-up length figures are usually the box. Add the A-frame and the propane tank, typically two to four feet, before you compare against a unit depth.
Folding camping trailers are a small and shrinking share of the market by shipment volume, but for anyone weighing storage cost against RV size, they remain the only category where the cheap answer and the good answer are the same answer.
Teardrop and Micro-Trailer Dimensions
Teardrops are the smallest RVs made: a sleeping cabin, usually a galley hatch at the rear, and not much else. Off-road and expedition-style micro-trailers have grown the category considerably in recent years.

The two sub-types
- Classic teardrops: 8–12 feet, 4.5–5.5 feet tall, often under 1,500 pounds. Towable behind a four-cylinder crossover. These are the only RVs that fit comfortably in a single-car garage with room to walk around.
- Off-road and squaredrop micro-trailers: 10–14 feet, 6–7 feet tall, 1,800–3,000 pounds. Taller suspension, larger tires, and roof racks push the height up substantially. A rooftop tent or a full-length rack can add two feet to an otherwise short trailer.
Storage implications
A teardrop is the easiest RV to store by a wide margin. Most fit an enclosed drive-up unit; many fit a garage; some fit under a carport. Width is genuinely the least of your worries at 5 to 7 feet.
The one measurement that catches people is height on the off-road builds. A squaredrop with a lift kit, 33-inch tires, and a roof rack can measure 7 feet or more, which is close enough to a typical drive-up door opening that you need the actual number rather than an estimate.
Toy Hauler and Truck Camper Dimensions
Two specialty categories that do not fit neatly into the standard class system but that a lot of people own.
Toy haulers
A toy hauler is a travel trailer or fifth wheel with a rear garage and a fold-down ramp door, built to carry motorcycles, side-by-sides, or a golf cart. The garage is what makes them the longest towables in common use.

Sizing notes specific to toy haulers:
- They are heavier than their length suggests because the frame is built to carry cargo weight in the rear. A 30-foot toy hauler can outweigh a 34-foot conventional trailer.
- The ramp door needs deployment space. A ramp typically extends 6 to 8 feet behind the trailer when lowered. If you plan to load or unload at your storage space, you need that clearance behind the parked position, and many facilities do not permit loading activity in a parking row.
- Fifth-wheel toy haulers stack the kingpin overhang on top of everything above. A 40-foot fifth-wheel toy hauler behind a dually is a 60-plus-foot combination.
Truck campers
A truck camper is a self-contained camper that sits in a pickup bed. It is classified as an RV, it is not a vehicle in its own right, and its dimensions have to be understood as a combination.

What actually matters:
- Total mounted height is the truck’s bed height plus the camper. On a three-quarter-ton pickup that commonly puts the roof at 10 to 11.5 feet, and a pop-top camper raised at camp goes higher still.
- Total mounted length is the truck plus any camper overhang past the rear bumper, typically 20 to 24 feet all in.
- Width is usually the camper’s overhang past the bed rails, not the truck body.
- Dismounted storage is the interesting case. A truck camper on its jacks in a storage space needs vertical clearance to be lifted off and set down, which is more than its parked height. If you store it dismounted, confirm the facility permits it and that there is overhead room to operate the jacks.
Why the Model Number Is Not the Length
Every RV manufacturer puts a number in the model name. Almost none of them agree on what it means.
Across the industry, the number in a model designation might refer to any of the following:
- Body or box length: the exterior of the living area only, excluding tongue or overhang. Most common on towables.
- Overall length: the honest number, used by some manufacturers and not others.
- Floor plan length: the interior dimension, which is shorter than either of the above.
- A rounded marketing figure with no consistent relationship to any measurement, sometimes rounded down.
- A sequence code that is not a length at all, particularly on motorhome trim designations.
The result is that two trailers both badged “26” can differ by four feet of actual overall length. This is not deceptive so much as unstandardized, but the effect on someone booking a campsite or renting a parking space is the same.
Three ways to get the real number
1. The manufacturer’s spec sheet for your exact model year. Look for a field labeled overall length or hitch-to-rear length. If the sheet lists only one length figure and does not say which, treat it as body length and add the tongue.
2. A VIN decoder. Your RV’s 17-character vehicle identification number encodes factory specifications. On a towable it is usually stamped on the frame rail near the hitch, on a plate inside the door frame, or on the manufacturer’s tag. Federal and commercial VIN decoding tools will return factory dimensions for many units, though coverage for towables is less complete than for motorized vehicles.
3. A tape measure. The only method that accounts for what you have added since purchase. Section 17 walks through it.
Why the measured number wins
Factory specifications describe the vehicle as it left Indiana. Yours has a bike rack now, or a rear cargo carrier, or an upgraded air conditioner, or a longer-tongue weight-distribution setup, or a ladder. Every one of those changes a dimension that someone will eventually check against an opening.
Measure once. Write the four numbers on a card in the glove box. You will use them for years.
Slide-Outs, Awnings, and the Width You Only Have at Camp
A slide-out is a section of wall that extends outward on rails to widen a room once you are parked. Slides are now standard on most mid-size and larger RVs, and they are the reason a trailer that is legally 8 feet 6 inches wide can feel like a room in a house.
How much width a slide adds
A single slide typically extends 2 to 3 feet from the sidewall. A large living-room slide can reach further. Rigs with opposing slides on both sides can widen by 4 to 6 feet total at camp, taking an 8.5-foot body to something in the 13-to-14-foot range across.
Two rules govern when that width counts:
- It never counts for road legality. Legal width is measured with slides retracted. A rig with large slides is exactly as legal as one without.
- It always counts for campsite fit. A site listed as accommodating your length can still be unusable if there is a tree, a picnic table, a utility pedestal, or a neighboring rig where your slide needs to go. Some campgrounds specify site width for this reason; most do not.
What this means for storage
Slides are retracted in storage, which means slide width is not the constraint on a parking space. What is worth checking is whether there is room to deploy a slide if you ever need to, whether for an inspection, a repair, or retrieving something from a cabinet behind a slide. Many storage rows are sized so that a deployed slide would reach into the neighboring space, which is one reason facilities generally do not permit extended activity at the space. If you need to open your rig up, plan to take it somewhere you can.
The hardware that never retracts
Slides retract. These do not:
- Awning rails and the rolled awning tube, which typically stand 4 to 8 inches proud of the sidewall along the full length of the rig. On a 102-inch body, this can be what actually makes you 8 feet 10 inches wide.
- Ladders, mounted at the rear and protruding 3 to 5 inches.
- Slide-out topper awnings and their brackets.
- Grab handles, mirrors, and marker lights.
- Exterior kitchen doors and hatches when open, which is worth knowing if you plan to use one where you park.
When you measure width, measure to the widest fixed hardware, not to the wall. That is the number that has to clear a gate.
Interior vs Exterior Dimensions: Where the Inches Go
An RV listed at 8 feet wide does not have 8-foot rooms. This trips up people comparing a floor plan against furniture, and it explains why two rigs with identical exterior width can feel different inside.
Horizontally
Between the outside of the wall and the inside of the room sit the exterior skin, the framing, insulation, interior paneling, and on a towable the chassis rails that determine floor width. Collectively these consume 8 to 14 inches of the exterior width.
So a trailer measuring 96 inches outside has interior rooms in the 82-to-88-inch range. A 102-inch rig has roughly 88 to 94 inches. That difference, six inches of exterior width translating to six inches of interior width, is why the wider models feel noticeably roomier despite a small number on paper.
Vertically
The same subtraction happens on the roof and floor. Roof structure, ceiling joists, ducting, subfloor, and underbelly consume 6 to 10 inches between exterior height and interior standing height.
Typical interior ceiling heights:
- Class A motorhomes: 6.5–7 feet
- Class C motorhomes: 6.5–7 feet in the main cabin
- Class B camper vans: 6–6.5 feet in high-roof models, under 6 feet in low-roof conversions
- Travel trailers: 6.5–7 feet
- Fifth wheels: 6.5–7 feet, with the raised front bedroom often the tallest space
If you are over six feet tall, this is worth checking against a specific unit rather than a class average, particularly on Class B vans where the variation is largest.
Why square footage figures vary so much
You will see interior square footage quoted for RVs, and the figures are inconsistent because there is no standard about whether slides are counted deployed or retracted. A trailer advertised at 300 square feet with slides out might be 230 square feet on the road. Neither number is wrong; they are answering different questions. When comparing models, confirm both are quoted the same way.
How to Measure Your Own RV in Fifteen Minutes
Everything above is orientation. This is the part that produces numbers you can act on. You need a 25-foot tape measure, a helper for the long runs, a stepladder, and something to write on.
Park on level ground, retract the slides, stow the awning, and hitch or unhitch to match how the rig will actually sit where you are taking it.
Overall length
Measure from the furthest forward point to the furthest rearward point, in a straight line parallel to the ground. Do not follow the contour of the body.
On a travel trailer the forward point is the coupler, or the propane tanks if they sit ahead of it. On a fifth wheel it is the front face of the kingpin overhang. On a motorhome it is the front bumper, unless something is mounted ahead of it. At the rear, check for a bumper-mounted bike rack, a cargo carrier, a spare tire, or a hitch receiver with a ball still in it. A ball mount left installed adds a foot and people forget it constantly.
Overall height
Measure from the ground to the top of the tallest thing on the roof, not the roofline. Set up the ladder, identify the tallest item, usually the forward air conditioner shroud, and measure straight down to the pavement. Do not measure to the roof and add a guess.
Two adjustments to keep in mind. Tire pressure and suspension load change ride height by an inch or two, so measure loaded if the rig is normally stored loaded. And on a towable, height changes with tongue jack position, so level it first.
Overall width
Measure across the widest fixed points, which is usually the awning rail on one side to the sidewall or opposing awning hardware on the other. Take a second measurement including mirrors on a motorized rig. Record both.
The fourth number: swing clearance
This one is not a measurement so much as an observation. Note the distance from the coupler or kingpin to the front axle on a towable, or the wheelbase on a motorhome. Longer distances mean wider turns. Then note anything that overhangs the rear axle, because that is what swings outward when you turn. A long rear overhang on a Class A can sweep several feet sideways during a tight maneuver, which is how gate posts get hit.
Write it down
Four numbers on a card, in the glove box: overall length, overall height, overall width at the body, overall width including mirrors. Add combination length if you tow. Every campground reservation, storage rental, and route plan for the next several years starts with these.
What the Shipment Data Says About the RV You Probably Own
Search for RV dimensions and you will get page after page leading with the Class A motorhome. It is the most photogenic RV and the most dramatic set of numbers. It is also nowhere close to what most people own, and building your mental model of “RV sizes” around it will mislead you.
The RV Industry Association publishes wholesale shipment data by product type. For calendar year 2025, the figures tell a clear story:
- Total RV shipments: 342,220 units.
- Towable RVs: 306,191 units, roughly 89% of the market.
- Motorhomes of all three classes combined: 36,029 units, roughly 11%.
- Conventional travel trailers alone: 232,530 units, roughly two-thirds of everything shipped.
- Fifth-wheel trailers: 65,632 units.
- Folding camping trailers: 3,945 units.
- Truck campers: 4,084 units.
Within the motorhome category, Class C leads on unit volume. That fact gets repeated in a lot of guides as the answer to “what is the most popular RV size,” which is a category error. Class C is the most popular motorhome, and motorhomes are about one in nine RVs sold. The most popular RV, by an enormous margin, is a conventional travel trailer.
Why this changes the sizing conversation
If two out of three RVs shipped are conventional travel trailers, then the typical RV sizing problem is not “where do I put a 43-foot diesel pusher.” It is:
- A trailer with a stated length in the low-to-mid twenties and an actual overall length three to five feet longer.
- A height between 10 and 12.5 feet once the air conditioner is counted: too tall for a garage, too tall for a drive-up unit, not tall enough to be obviously impossible, which is exactly the range where people guess wrong.
- A width at or near 102 inches.
- A tow vehicle that also needs somewhere to go.
That is the profile this guide is built around, and it is why the storage sections that follow spend most of their attention on the 25-to-40-foot range rather than on the extremes.
Where the RVs are
The same industry data reports Texas as the top destination state for wholesale RV shipments at just under 10% of the national total, followed by California, Florida, Michigan, and Ohio. Texas and Florida being high on that list is worth noting if you are shopping for storage in either state. RV storage in high-ownership markets tends to be tighter on availability and to fill seasonally.
Legal Size Limits for RVs on U.S. Roads
Knowing your dimensions is useful. Knowing which of them are legally regulated is what keeps you out of a conversation on the shoulder. This section describes the general framework and the ranges you will commonly encounter. It is not legal advice and it is not a substitute for checking your own state.
Verify before you tow. Size limits are set state by state, they differ between interstate and secondary routes, and they change. Every state department of transportation publishes current figures. If your rig is anywhere near a limit, confirm it against the official source for every state on your route rather than relying on any summary, including this one.
Width: the most standardized dimension
Width has the firmest national anchor. Federal regulation establishes 102 inches as the standard on the National Network, and states are not permitted to set a different figure for vehicles operating on it. Hawaii is the recognized exception at 108 inches.
Two caveats. First, state rules on secondary and local roads can be more restrictive, and your route almost certainly includes both kinds of road. Second, states differ on which appurtenances are excluded from the measurement and by how much. If your body width is at 102 inches, the practical question is not whether you are legal but whether the specific road you are on is comfortable, which is a different judgment.
Height: no single federal number
There is no single nationwide legal height for RVs. States commonly set limits in the 13.5-to-14-foot range. The interstate system is engineered with vertical clearance well above that, which is why long-haul travel on interstates rarely produces a clearance problem.
The regulated number is almost never your constraint anyway. Posted clearances on older bridges, underpasses, tunnels, and commercial canopies are what actually stop you, and those are frequently below 12 feet. A legal-height RV can still be too tall for the road in front of it.
Length: single vehicle and combination
Length is where states vary most, and where two separate numbers apply.
- Single-vehicle length caps the motorhome or the trailer on its own. Many states set this at 45 feet, which is why the largest Class A coaches stop where they do, since the product is built to the regulatory ceiling.
- Combination length caps the tow vehicle plus everything behind it. This is the one that catches people. Common state caps fall in the 65-to-75-foot range, and a long-bed dually towing a 40-foot fifth-wheel toy hauler can approach that without feeling like an unusual setup.
Some states also regulate double-towing, meaning pulling a boat or utility trailer behind a fifth wheel, separately, and a number prohibit it entirely. If you triple-tow, that is a state-specific question every single time.
Licensing thresholds
Most states do not require any special license to drive a personal RV below the commercial weight thresholds. Some do impose a non-commercial special endorsement above a stated gross combination weight rating, and the threshold and the endorsement name differ by state. Weight, not length, is usually what triggers it. If you own a large diesel pusher or a heavy fifth-wheel combination, this is worth confirming with your own state licensing agency rather than assuming.
We are being deliberately general here. The specifics change often enough that a number printed in an article ages badly, and the consequence of relying on a stale figure falls on you rather than on whoever published it.
Where Your Dimensions Get You Turned Away
Legal limits are the ceiling. The things that actually stop RV owners are lower, more local, and more numerous.
Campgrounds and public parks
Campground length limits are set by the physical pad and the loop road, not by regulation, and they are enforced on arrival. Public campgrounds in particular were largely built decades ago for much smaller vehicles.
What to know:
- Public campground sites skew short. Availability drops sharply above the mid-twenties and drops again above the mid-thirties. Reporting compiled across park systems consistently puts the typical accommodation in the mid-to-high twenties, though individual parks range widely.
- The stated limit may or may not include your tow vehicle. Reservation systems and park pages are inconsistent about this, and the two answers can differ by twenty feet. When a site listing is ambiguous, the park itself is the authority.
- Site listings are per-site, not per-campground. A park advertising sites up to 40 feet may have four of them among three hundred.
- The loop road is often the real constraint. A pad long enough for your rig is useless if the turn into it is not.
- Slide clearance is rarely published. Length fits, width fits, and then a tree occupies the space your bedroom slide needs.
Tunnels, bridges, and posted routes
Individual structures impose their own limits, and they are absolute. The Zion–Mount Carmel Highway in Utah is the best-known example among RV travelers, and it is also a useful lesson in how fast this information goes stale.
For decades, oversized vehicles could buy a permit and cross the Zion tunnel under ranger escort with traffic held to one lane. That permit system was eliminated in June 2026. Vehicles exceeding the posted size and weight limits are now required to reroute rather than obtain an escort, and the restriction applies to the whole stretch of highway between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance, not only the tunnel itself. The park has cited safety studies validated by federal highway authorities as the basis.
The commonly cited thresholds are 11 feet 4 inches in height and 7 feet 10 inches in width, with weight capped at 50,000 pounds and a separate limit on hitch-to-rear-axle distance for trailers. Published sources currently disagree on the stated maximum length. Figures in the mid-twenties and mid-thirties of feet both appear in circulation, including between park and state transportation sources. We are not going to resolve that disagreement by guessing. If Zion is on your route, get the current figure from the National Park Service directly before you commit to it.
Two general lessons from this example. First, a width limit of 7 feet 10 inches excludes nearly every RV in this guide, and many heavy-duty pickups on their mirrors alone. Second, published guidance about specific structures ages quickly. Plenty of articles still tell readers to buy a Zion tunnel permit that no longer exists.
Residential and neighborhood restrictions
The most common reason people rent RV storage has nothing to do with roads:
- HOA covenants frequently prohibit recreational vehicles in driveways or on the street, sometimes with a permitted window measured in hours for loading.
- Municipal ordinances restrict RV parking on residential streets independently of any HOA, and enforcement is usually complaint-driven.
- Physical fit. A 32-foot travel trailer occupies most of a suburban driveway and blocks the garage.
- Setback and screening rules in some jurisdictions permit RV storage on your own property only behind the front building line or behind a screening fence.
These restrictions are indifferent to your dimensions in one sense, since a rule prohibiting recreational vehicles applies to a teardrop as much as to a coach, and highly sensitive to them in another, because a rig small enough to fit inside a garage is frequently outside the rule entirely.
RV Dimensions vs Storage Dimensions: The Door Is the Constraint
Here is the arithmetic that almost no storage size guide publishes, and it is the reason so many people arrive at a facility with a reservation and a rig that will not go in.
A storage unit’s stated size describes its floor. It does not describe its opening. When a facility lists a 10x30 unit, the 10 and the 30 are the interior floor dimensions. The door is a separate, smaller thing.
What a drive-up unit door actually measures
On a standard drive-up unit with a roll-up door, the opening is meaningfully smaller than the unit:
- Door width is typically about a foot narrower than the unit width, because the door track and framing occupy the difference. A 10-foot-wide unit commonly has a door opening in the range of 8 to 9 feet.
- Door height is typically 7 to 8 feet on standard construction, and the clear height when the door is rolled up can be slightly less than the frame, because the coiled door and its hardware sit at the top of the opening.
- Interior ceiling height is usually 8 to 10 feet, which is taller than the door. This is precisely why people get confused: the space inside is tall enough and the way in is not.
These figures vary by facility and by building, and they are the kind of thing worth confirming for the specific unit rather than assuming. But the pattern holds nearly everywhere: the door is the smallest dimension in the transaction.
Now run it against the RV numbers
Take the height ranges from earlier in this guide and compare them to a 7-to-8-foot door opening:
- Class A motorhome, 12–13.5 ft: exceeds the door by 4 to 6 feet. Not close.
- Fifth wheel, 12–13.5 ft: exceeds the door by 4 to 6 feet. Not close.
- Class C motorhome, 10–12 ft: exceeds the door by 2 to 5 feet. Not close.
- Travel trailer, 9–11.5 ft: exceeds the door by 1 to 4 feet. Not close, and this is the category most people assume will fit.
- Class B camper van, 7.5–10 ft: exceeds a 7-to-8-foot door in most configurations. A low-roof conversion is the borderline case.
- Truck camper mounted on a pickup, 10–11.5 ft: exceeds the door.
- Pop-up camper collapsed, under 5 ft: fits, with room.
- Teardrop trailer, 4.5–7 ft: fits, unless it is a lifted off-road build with a roof rack.
Read that list again. Length never entered into it. You could rent a hypothetical 10x60 unit and a Class A still would not go through the door.
Width closes the door too
Even setting height aside, width is a problem. An 8-to-9-foot door opening against a body width of 8 to 8.5 feet leaves inches, and the awning rail and mirrors eat those inches. Threading a 102-inch-wide trailer through a 100-inch opening is theoretically possible and practically a bad afternoon.
Why this matters more than any size chart
You will find published storage recommendations pairing specific unit sizes with specific RV classes, a 10x30 for a Class B motorhome for instance, on pages that elsewhere list that same class at 9 to 10 feet tall. Those recommendations are generated by matching length to unit depth and skipping the other two dimensions entirely. They are not survivable in the real world.
The correct question is never “how long is my RV and which unit is that long.” It is “what is my true height and width, and what is the actual opening.” If the answer to the first exceeds the second, no unit length helps you, and you are looking at outdoor or covered parking. Which is fine. It is what these vehicles are designed for.
Which RVs Actually Fit Inside an Enclosed Storage Unit
Short answer: a small minority, and it is a shorter list than you would guess from reading storage industry content.
Realistic candidates for an enclosed drive-up unit
- Pop-up and folding camping trailers. The strongest candidate by far. Under 5 feet tall collapsed and 7 to 8 feet wide, a pop-up clears a standard door on every axis. A 10x20 unit handles most; check the overall length including the A-frame tongue, and check the collapsed height if there is a roof-mounted air conditioner.
- Teardrop and small utility-style trailers. At 4.5 to 7 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide, these fit comfortably. A 10x20 is generous for most; a 10x15 handles the smaller ones. The exception is lifted off-road builds with roof racks, which can reach 7 feet or more.
- Enclosed cargo and utility trailers. Not RVs, but frequently stored alongside them. Small and mid-size enclosed trailers often fit a 10x20 or 10x30 depending on the model and roof height.
- Low-roof Class B conversions. The single motorized borderline case. A low-roof or pop-top van without a fixed rooftop air conditioner can measure under 8 feet, which puts it in range at facilities with taller door openings. This one genuinely requires measuring both the van and the specific door before you commit.
Not realistic candidates, regardless of unit length
- Class A motorhomes, in any configuration
- Class C motorhomes, including compact ones
- High-roof Class B camper vans
- Conventional travel trailers of essentially any size, because even a small one exceeds the door height
- Fifth wheels and fifth-wheel toy haulers
- Truck campers mounted on a pickup
- Hard-sided A-frame campers with rooftop equipment
If your rig is on the second list, an enclosed unit is not a size you have not found yet. It is the wrong product. That is not a failure of the facility and it is not something a manager can solve at the counter.
What people are usually actually asking
When someone asks whether their RV fits in a storage unit, the underlying question is generally one of these:
- “Can I keep it out of the sun and rain?” Covered parking is the answer for most rigs. It is a canopy over a parking space, and clearance under the canopy still has to exceed your true height, so the same measurement applies, just against a taller number.
- “Can I keep it somewhere secure?” A gated lot with cameras and coded entry does that, enclosed or not.
- “Can I get it off my driveway before the HOA writes again?” Any parking space solves that, and it is the most common reason people call.

How to Size an Outdoor or Covered Parking Space
For nearly every RV, this is the real decision. The arithmetic is simple and almost nobody does it.
The formula
Overall length, plus five feet, rounded up to the next available space size.
Not stated length. Not model number. Overall length as you measured it in Section 17: coupler to rear bumper on a towable, front bumper to whatever is furthest back on a motorhome.
The five feet is not padding for its own sake. It is the room you need to swing the tongue while backing in without contacting the vehicle in the adjacent space, and the room to walk around the rig once parked. Skip it and you will be able to get in on a good day and not on a windy one.
Worked examples
- A “24-foot” travel trailer. Body 24 ft, tongue adds 4 ft, so overall is 28 ft. Add 5 ft, and you need 33 ft, which means a 35-foot space, not a 30-foot one. This single example accounts for a large share of RV storage sizing mistakes.
- A 31-foot Class C motorhome. Overall 31 ft with nothing mounted at the rear, or 33 ft with a bike rack. Add 5 ft: a 35-to-40-foot space.
- A “34-foot” fifth wheel. Body 34 ft, kingpin overhang adds 4 ft, so overall is 38 ft. Add 5 ft: a 45-to-50-foot space. Fifth wheels are the type most likely to need a bigger space than their owners expect.
- A 21-foot Class B camper van. Overall 21 ft. Add 5 ft: a 25-to-30-foot space, and it will feel roomy.
- A 40-foot Class A diesel pusher. Overall 40 ft plus a rear cargo carrier. Add 5 ft: a 45-to-50-foot space, and confirm the drive aisle before you book.
The other two measurements still apply
Height matters for covered parking. An open space has no height limit; a canopy does. Measure to the top of your air conditioner and confirm the clear height under the structure, not the height at its tallest point. Canopies frequently slope.
Width matters at the gate, not the space. Parking spaces are generally wide enough. The gate, the turn into the drive aisle, and any bollards or curbs are where width becomes real.
Things worth confirming before you rent
- Drive aisle width. The determining factor in whether you can back a long rig in. Wider is genuinely better and it is a legitimate reason to choose one facility over another.
- Surface. Paved, gravel, or compacted base. A heavy fifth wheel on landing gear can sink into soft surfaces over months; pads under the jacks solve it.
- Gate hours. RV departures happen early and arrivals happen late. Facilities with 24-hour gate access are a meaningfully different product from those with office hours.
- What the facility does not offer. Most self storage facilities have no dump station, no shore power, no wash bay, and no on-site maintenance. Ours do not. Knowing that before you arrive with full tanks saves a trip.

Treat these as starting points for a conversation with a facility, not as guarantees. Available space lengths vary by location, and your rig’s measured numbers always outrank a category average.
- Teardrop trailer: overall 10–17 ft · a 20 ft space, or an enclosed 10x15 or 10x20 unit if height clears the door
- Pop-up / folding camper: overall 12–20 ft collapsed · a 20–25 ft space, or an enclosed 10x20 unit; check collapsed height including any rooftop unit

Three sizing habits worth adopting
Round up, always. The cost difference between space sizes is small relative to the cost of discovering the problem on move-in day with a hitched rig and no room to turn around.
Size for the rig you have, not the one you are shopping for. Month-to-month terms mean you can move up later without penalty. Paying for length you do not use yet is not a hedge, it is a subscription.
Bring your four numbers. Length, height, width at the body, width including mirrors. Any facility can answer your question in thirty seconds with those and cannot answer it at all without them.

When You Should Not Rent RV Storage
We sell storage. We would still rather you not rent a space you do not need, because the people who regret an RV storage rental almost always regretted it within the first two months and were never going to be long-term customers anyway.
Here are the situations where the honest answer is no.
Your RV is small enough to keep at home and nothing prohibits it
If you own a teardrop, a pop-up, or a low-roof camper van, and your driveway fits it, and your HOA and municipality permit it, keep it at home. A collapsed pop-up under a carport or in a garage is better off than in a rented space and costs nothing. The dimensional thresholds worth checking: under about 7 feet tall and under about 20 feet overall usually means home storage is viable.
You are storing it for less than about six weeks
Short gaps between trips rarely justify a rental. Between the drive to the facility, the drive back, and the prep at both ends, a month-long storage stint can cost more in time than it saves in driveway space. If you use the rig every few weeks in season, park it at home during the season and store it for the off-season only. Month-to-month terms exist precisely so you can do that.
You have not measured the rig yet
Do not rent based on a model number. We have watched people book a 30-foot space for a “28-foot” trailer that turned out to be 32 feet overall, and the discovery happens with the trailer hitched, at the gate, on a Saturday. Fifteen minutes with a tape measure first is not optional preparation, it is the whole job.
You are hoping storage solves a weather problem it cannot solve
This is the one worth being most direct about. An outdoor parking space protects your RV from theft and from your HOA. It does not protect the plumbing from freezing. If your RV will sit through freezing weather, it needs to be winterized properly, meaning water system drained, lines blown out or filled with RV antifreeze, and tanks emptied and flushed, regardless of where it is parked. Renting a space and skipping the winterization is how a stored RV becomes a repair bill.
Covered parking helps with sun and precipitation. It is a canopy, not a building, and it should be evaluated on that basis.
The rig needs work before it needs storage
A roof seam that is marginal in October is a leak by March. A rodent problem that starts with food left in a cabinet compounds over a winter. Storage does not pause deterioration; it just moves it somewhere you are not looking. If your RV needs a roof reseal, a tire replacement, or a thorough cleaning out, do that before it goes into a space, not after it comes out.
Also worth knowing before you commit: most self storage facilities, ours included, do not permit maintenance, washing, or fluid changes on site, and have no dump station. Whatever the rig needs, it needs before it arrives.
Frequently Asked Questions About RV Sizes
Most RVs on U.S. roads measure 20 to 35 feet long, 8 to 8.5 feet wide, and 10 to 13.5 feet tall. The full category spans from 8-foot teardrop trailers to 45-foot Class A motorhomes. Because the range is so wide, the type-level figure is more useful than the overall average, and the most common type by a wide margin is the conventional travel trailer.
Nearly all RVs built for U.S. roads measure between 96 and 102 inches wide, which is 8 feet to 8 feet 6 inches. Federal regulation sets 102 inches as the width standard on the National Network of highways, and manufacturers build to it. Small teardrops and van-based rigs run narrower, down to about 5 to 7 feet. Mirrors and awning hardware add several inches beyond the body width.
Camper width depends on the type. Conventional travel trailers run 7 to 8.5 feet wide, pop-up campers 7 to 8 feet, truck campers 7 to 8 feet, and teardrop trailers 5 to 7 feet. Larger campers are almost always built at or near the 102-inch maximum. Slide-outs add 2 to 3 feet per side when deployed at a campsite, but do not count toward legal road width.
RV length ranges from about 8 feet for a small teardrop trailer to 45 feet for the largest Class A motorhomes. Class B camper vans run 17 to 24 feet, Class C motorhomes 20 to 35 feet, conventional travel trailers 12 to 35 feet of body, and fifth wheels 22 to 42 feet of body. On towables, add 3 to 5 feet for the tongue or kingpin overhang to get actual overall length.
Most RVs stand 9 to 13.5 feet tall measured to the roofline. Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels sit at the top of that range at 12 to 13.5 feet; travel trailers run 9 to 11.5 feet; collapsed pop-up campers are under 5 feet. Manufacturer height figures exclude rooftop air conditioners, vent covers, and antennas, which typically add 8 to 14 inches. Always measure to the tallest point yourself before planning around clearance.
By shipment volume, the conventional travel trailer is by far the most common RV, accounting for roughly two-thirds of all new RVs shipped in 2025 according to RV Industry Association data. Most fall between 20 and 30 feet of body length. Class C is the leading motorhome type, but motorhomes of all classes together represent only about a tenth of the market.
Usually not. Manufacturers typically publish travel trailer length as body length, measured from the front wall to the rear bumper, which excludes the A-frame tongue. The tongue adds 3 to 5 feet. Fifth-wheel length similarly excludes the kingpin overhang that extends over the truck bed. Campgrounds and storage facilities mean overall length, so measure from the furthest forward point to the furthest rearward point.
In most cases, no, and the reason is height rather than length. Enclosed drive-up units typically have door openings 7 to 8 feet tall, while nearly every RV except a collapsed pop-up or a small teardrop is taller than that. Renting a longer unit does not solve it, because the door is the constraint. Outdoor or covered parking is the standard option for travel trailers, fifth wheels, and motorhomes of every class.
Measure the overall length from the coupler to the rear bumper, then add about five feet for maneuvering room, then round up to the next available space size. A trailer sold as 24 feet is commonly 28 feet overall, which means a 35-foot space rather than a 30-foot one. Model numbers usually describe body length and run several feet short of the real figure.
There are three routes: the manufacturer’s spec sheet for your exact model year, a VIN decoder using the 17-character identification number stamped on the frame rail or door frame, or a tape measure. Measuring is the most reliable, because factory specifications do not account for a bike rack, roof rack, upgraded air conditioner, or anything else added after purchase.
Weights range widely by type. Teardrop trailers start around 500 pounds and pop-ups run 700 to 3,000. Conventional travel trailers span 1,200 to 10,500 pounds, Class B vans 6,000 to 11,000, Class C motorhomes 10,000 to 15,000, fifth wheels 7,000 to 20,000, and Class A motorhomes 13,000 to 30,000. Check your rig’s gross vehicle weight rating on its data plate rather than relying on a category range, particularly when matching a trailer to a tow vehicle.
It varies substantially by park and by individual campsite. Public campground availability drops off sharply above the mid-twenties in feet and again above the mid-thirties, since many sites were built decades ago for smaller vehicles. Reservation listings are per-site rather than per-campground, and they are inconsistent about whether the stated limit includes a tow vehicle. Check the specific park’s own campground page before booking.
Not for legal road width, which is measured with slides retracted. They very much count for campsite fit, since a deployed slide extends 2 to 3 feet into the site and can be blocked by a tree, a picnic table, or a utility pedestal. In storage, slides stay retracted, so they do not affect the space size you need.
Sometimes, and it is worth checking before you rent anything. Many HOA covenants prohibit recreational vehicles in driveways or on the street, and plenty of municipalities restrict street parking for large vehicles independently. Where it is permitted and the rig physically fits, home storage is the cheaper answer, particularly for teardrops, pop-ups, and small camper vans.
Yes, if it will sit through freezing weather. An outdoor parking space or covered canopy protects against theft and gets the RV off your property, but it does not keep plumbing above freezing. Drain the water system, bypass the water heater, run RV antifreeze through the lines, and empty and flush the holding tanks before arrival, exactly as you would if the rig were parked at home.
