Almost every page that answers “how long is a car” gives you the same number: 14.7 feet. It gets repeated across storage blogs, shipping companies, insurance sites, and a long tail of auto-content farms, usually with no source attached and no model year mentioned. It is a tidy number. It is also, for the vehicle sitting in your driveway right now, very likely wrong, and wrong in the direction that costs you money.

Here is the problem in one example. A 2026 Toyota Corolla sedan measures 182.5 inches long. That is 15.2 feet. The most-cited guide on this topic calls the Corolla a compact car, tells you compact cars run 10 to 14 feet, and then recommends a 10x15 storage unit for compact cars. Every one of those three statements is inconsistent with the other two, and a reader who trusted all of them would rent a unit six inches shorter than the car they are trying to park in it.

This guide does it differently. The class averages come from actual published manufacturer specifications for current model years, not from a number that has been copied sideways for a decade. The classification section explains why “compact” does not mean what you think it means. It is a federal interior volume category, which is why a Bentley can legally be a subcompact. And the fleet-wide trend data comes from the EPA’s Automotive Trends Report, which is the only body in the United States that measures new-vehicle size systematically.

Then, because dimensions are almost never an idle curiosity, the back half of this guide does the arithmetic that the question is usually really about: whether your vehicle fits. Not just in a parking space or a garage, but through the roll-up door of a storage unit, which is the measurement that actually stops people, and the one that no size guide publishes. The Short Answer: Average Car Dimensions at a Glance

If you came here for a number and intend to leave immediately, these are the ones worth carrying:

  • Average passenger car length: roughly 15 to 16 feet (180 to 192 inches). The typical modern sedan sits closer to the top of that band than the bottom.
  • Average passenger car width: roughly 6 feet (about 71 to 74 inches) measured across the body, not including mirrors. Add 8 to 14 inches for mirrors.
  • Average passenger car height: roughly 4.7 feet (about 56 to 58 inches) for a sedan. Crossovers and SUVs run 63 to 78 inches.

  • The single most useful number: your own vehicle’s overall length, measured bumper to bumper including anything that projects past them. Every sizing decision downstream depends on it.

Three qualifiers matter more than the numbers themselves, and they are the reason this guide runs long.

First, “car” is doing an enormous amount of work in that first bullet. In model year 2024, only 34 percent of new vehicles sold in the United States were classified as cars under federal regulations. The other 66 percent were trucks, a category that includes SUVs, pickups, minivans, and vans. Truck-classified SUVs alone accounted for half of all new vehicle production. An “average car” figure that excludes two-thirds of what people actually drive is not describing the vehicle in most driveways.

Second, published width almost never includes mirrors, and mirrors are what hit things. A pickup that reads as 79.9 inches wide on a spec sheet is 95.7 inches wide with the mirrors out and can exceed 105 inches with trailer tow mirrors extended. That is a two-foot swing on the measurement that determines whether you clear a doorway.

Third, the classes are not what they sound like. “Compact,” “mid-size,” and “full-size” are federal categories based on how much room is inside the car, not how big it is outside. That distinction is the source of most of the bad numbers floating around this topic, and it gets its own section below.

How Long Is the Average Car?

Length is the dimension people ask about first, because it is the one that governs parking, garages, and storage. It is also the dimension with the widest spread across the vehicle market. The gap between the shortest and longest things sold as everyday transportation is close to nine feet.

Working from published specifications for current model years rather than from a rounded average, here is where the classes actually land:

  • Mid-size sedans: roughly 190 to 196 inches (15.8 to 16.3 feet).

  • Compact and small crossovers: roughly 165 to 182 inches (13.8 to 15.2 feet). Small crossovers are frequently shorter than the compact sedans they are cross-shopped against, which surprises people.

Why one average length is not very useful

If you take a weighted average across everything sold in the United States, you land somewhere in the neighborhood of 15.5 to 16 feet. But that number describes almost nothing you can act on. The standard deviation is enormous, and the decisions people make with a length figure are all pass or fail: will this fit in the garage, will it fit in a 20-foot unit, can I park it on this street. An average that is a foot off is not a small error in that context. It is the difference between the door closing and not closing.

The practical version of the answer: assume 16 feet for a sedan and 17 to 20 feet for anything truck-shaped, then measure the actual vehicle before you commit to a space.

How Wide Is the Average Car?

Width is where most published guides quietly mislead, and it is the dimension that causes the most real-world trouble. The reason is simple: manufacturers publish body width, and body width is not the number that matters when you are threading a vehicle through an opening.

Across the body, fender to fender with mirrors excluded, the current market looks like this:

  • Compact cars: roughly 70 to 72 inches. The 2026 Corolla is 70.1 inches; the 2026 Civic is 70.9 inches.
  • Mid-size sedans: roughly 72 to 75 inches.
  • Full-size sedans: roughly 74 to 77 inches.
  • Compact crossovers: roughly 70 to 74 inches.
  • Mid-size SUVs: roughly 74 to 80 inches.
  • Full-size SUVs: roughly 78 to 84 inches.

Now add the mirrors

Ford publishes an unusually complete set of width figures for the F-150, and they are worth quoting because they show the scale of the gap. For a 2026 SuperCrew:

  • Width excluding mirrors: 79.9 inches
  • Width with mirrors folded: 83.6 inches
  • Width including standard mirrors: 95.7 inches
  • Width with trailer tow mirrors folded: 85.3 inches
  • Width including trailer tow mirrors: 105.9 inches

That is a 26-inch spread on a single truck, depending on which number you use. The advertised figure of 79.9 inches is the one least connected to whether the truck clears an opening. The figure you need is 95.7, or 105.9 if it is equipped for towing.

Sedans are less dramatic but the same principle applies. Mirrors typically add 8 to 14 inches of total width to a passenger car. A Civic that reads as 70.9 inches wide is closer to 80 to 83 inches across the mirrors. Some vehicles publish a mirrors-folded figure; most do not, and you will have to measure.

The rule worth internalizing: for anything involving a doorway, a gate, a car wash, or a storage unit, use the mirrors-extended width unless you are certain you can fold them. For anything involving a lane, a bridge, or a parking stall, body width is the relevant number.

How Tall Is the Average Car?

Height is the dimension people ignore right up until it stops them at a parking garage entrance or a storage unit door. It is also the dimension most affected by things that are not on the spec sheet.

  • Sports cars and two-seaters: roughly 47 to 52 inches.
  • Compact and mid-size sedans: roughly 55 to 58 inches.
  • Full-size sedans: roughly 56 to 60 inches.
  • Compact crossovers: roughly 61 to 67 inches.
  • Mid-size SUVs: roughly 65 to 73 inches.
  • Full-size SUVs: roughly 74 to 78 inches.
  • Minivans: roughly 68 to 72 inches.
  • Full-size pickups: roughly 75 to 78 inches for standard models. Off-road trims run taller. A 2026 F-150 Tremor is 79.2 inches, and a Raptor is 79.5 to 80.7 inches depending on tire package.
  • High-roof cargo vans: 95 to 110 inches. These are a different problem entirely and will not enter a standard storage unit.

What adds height that the spec sheet does not know about

Published height is measured on a stock vehicle at curb weight on level ground. Real vehicles accumulate inches:

  • Roof racks and crossbars: typically 2 to 4 inches above the roofline.
  • A rooftop cargo box: 15 to 20 inches above the rack. This is the single biggest height addition most people make and the one most likely to be forgotten.
  • Rooftop tents: 8 to 14 inches folded.

  • Ladder racks and toolboxes on a pickup: can add a foot or more.

Suspension also works the other direction. A vehicle carrying a heavy load sits lower than its published height, sometimes by an inch or more. That is rarely enough to rescue a clearance problem, but it is worth knowing that the number is not fixed.

What Compact, Mid-Size, and Full-Size Actually Mean

This is the section that resolves most of the confusion on this topic, and it is missing from every guide currently ranking for it.

In the United States, passenger car size classes are federal definitions, and they are based on interior volume, meaning passenger space plus cargo space added together and expressed in cubic feet. They are not based on length, width, height, or weight. The EPA uses this index to group vehicles for fuel economy comparison, which is why you see the class name on a window sticker and on fueleconomy.gov.

The passenger car classes work out like this:

  • Minicompact: under 85 cubic feet of combined interior volume
  • Subcompact: 85 to 99.9 cubic feet
  • Compact: 100 to 109.9 cubic feet
  • Mid-size: 110 to 119.9 cubic feet
  • Large (full-size): 120 cubic feet or more

Station wagons get their own thresholds, and the large-wagon boundary sits at 160 cubic feet rather than 120.

Why this breaks the intuitive reading

Because the classification measures the inside of the car, a vehicle can be physically large and land in a small class, or physically modest and land in a big one. The frequently cited example is the Bentley Continental GT Speed, which the EPA classifies as a subcompact. It is a long, wide, heavy grand tourer with a small cabin relative to its footprint. Nobody would look at it in a parking lot and call it a subcompact.

The same logic works in reverse. A tall, boxy small car with an efficient interior package can index into a class above what its exterior suggests. And because SUVs and light trucks are classified separately, by gross vehicle weight rating and drivetrain rather than interior volume, a compact crossover and a mid-size sedan can occupy entirely different classification systems while sitting within inches of each other on the road.

There is also a marketing layer sitting on top of all of it. Manufacturers describe their vehicles however they like. Rental car companies use a third vocabulary entirely, where “standard” and “full-size” mean something specific to fleet booking and nothing to the EPA.

Why this matters for the numbers you find online

Here is the failure that propagates. A writer sees that compact cars are defined as 100 to 109.9 cubic feet. Somewhere downstream, that gets transcribed into a table under a heading like “square footage,” or gets confused with exterior dimensions. Once the interior volume figure is sitting next to length and width numbers, the categories blur, and the length ranges attached to each class start drifting away from reality.

That is how the widely republished claim that compact cars are “10 to 14 feet” long survives despite being wrong about essentially every compact car currently sold. A vehicle 10 feet long would be a microcar, the sort of thing sold in Europe and Japan as a quadricycle or kei car, not something you will find on a US dealer lot in the compact class. The actual compact class today starts around 14.9 feet.

The practical takeaway: when you are trying to figure out whether something fits, ignore the class name entirely. Class names are regulatory and marketing artifacts. Use the vehicle’s own published length, width, and height, and verify them against the specific model year and trim.

Where the Most-Quoted Average Car Length Came From and Why It Misleads

Search this topic and you will hit the same figure repeatedly: the average car is 14.7 feet long, about 5.8 feet wide, and 4 to 5 feet tall. It appears on storage company blogs, international shipping sites, insurance explainers, and a large number of pages that appear to exist mainly to host that table.

Trace it and two things become apparent.

First, the figure is almost never sourced. The pages carrying it do not cite a dataset, an agency, a model year, or a methodology. Several of them reproduce the same sentence structure and the same class breakdown, which is the signature of a number that has been copied rather than calculated. One of the pages carrying it was published in 2019 and reads identically to pages updated this year.

Second, the figure is old enough to be materially wrong. 14.7 feet is 176.4 inches. There is no current mainstream sedan class whose average sits there. Compacts are around 182 to 185 inches. Mid-size sedans are around 190 to 196. The 176-inch neighborhood is subcompact territory now. Whatever fleet that number described, it was not the fleet on the road today, and the composition of the market has shifted decisively toward larger vehicles since.

The specific errors worth knowing about

Because this affects what you will read elsewhere, a few of the recurring mistakes are worth naming directly:

  • Compact cars listed as 10 to 14 feet long. Wrong at both ends. Nothing in the US compact class is 10 feet, and the class average exceeds 15 feet.
  • Interior volume presented as exterior square footage. Several widely shared tables list “100 to 109 cubic feet” in a column headed square footage. Those are the EPA interior volume thresholds, and they describe cabin space, not the footprint the vehicle occupies.
  • Internally contradictory ranges in the same article. It is common to find a page stating compacts are 10 to 14 feet in one section and 170 to 180 inches in another, with the two never reconciled.
  • Discontinued vehicles used as current examples. Tables citing the Dodge Grand Caravan as a current minivan benchmark are describing a model that left the US market years ago.
  • Storage recommendations that contradict the article’s own dimensions. The most consequential one: recommending a 10x15 unit for compact cars on a page that also lists compacts at up to 15 feet. A 15-foot car does not go into a 15-foot unit.

None of this is malicious. It is what happens when an entire content category sources from itself. The way out is to go to bodies that actually measure vehicles, which is the next section.

Vehicle Footprint: How the Federal Government Actually Measures Car Size

There is an official, systematically tracked measure of vehicle size in the United States, and almost nobody writing about car dimensions mentions it. It is called footprint, and it is the metric federal fuel economy and emissions standards are built on.

Footprint is defined as wheelbase multiplied by average track width, effectively the rectangle enclosed by the four points where the tires meet the road. Wheelbase is the distance from front axle centerline to rear axle centerline. Track width is the distance from the centerline of one tire to the centerline of the opposite tire on the same axle. Multiply them and you get an area, expressed in square feet.

The EPA has tracked footprint for the entire new light-duty fleet since model year 2008, and both the EPA greenhouse gas standards and the NHTSA Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards are footprint-based. Each manufacturer’s compliance target depends on the mix of footprints in what it sells, which means every vehicle sold in the country has a footprint value calculated for it and reported.

Why footprint is useful even though it is not what you measure with a tape

Footprint is not overall length times overall width. It excludes overhangs entirely, meaning the parts of the body that extend past the axles, so a vehicle’s footprint is always smaller than the rectangle it actually occupies. You cannot use a footprint figure to decide whether something fits in a garage.

What it is good for is comparison and trend. Because it is measured consistently across the whole fleet by a single methodology, footprint is the only apples-to-apples measure of how vehicle size is changing over time. Overall length varies with bumper design and styling; wheelbase and track do not move without a real change in the vehicle’s architecture.

It also explains something counterintuitive. Because track width is measured centerline to centerline, a performance trim with wider tires can calculate to a narrower track than the base model on the same platform, and therefore a smaller footprint, despite being physically wider at the fenders. It is a reminder that any single number describing something as complicated as a vehicle is a simplification with edges.

Cars Have Been Getting Bigger: What the EPA Data Shows

The intuition that vehicles have grown is correct, and the EPA Automotive Trends Report puts numbers on it.

Fleet-wide average footprint rose from 48.9 square feet in model year 2008 to 51.5 square feet in model year 2024, an increase of 5.4 percent. Preliminary model year 2025 data points to a further small rise, to roughly 51.8 square feet. The EPA notes that footprint has been generally increasing across the entire period it has been tracked.

A 5.4 percent increase in footprint sounds modest. It is not, for two reasons.

First, footprint is an area, so a 5.4 percent area increase reflects a meaningful growth in both dimensions at once. Second, and this is the larger effect, the fleet average understates what has happened to the individual vehicle types, because the composition of the market changed underneath it.

The mix shift is the real story

In model year 2024, cars were 34 percent of new vehicle production and trucks were 66 percent. Truck-classified SUVs alone accounted for half of all new vehicles built. The EPA describes the long-term trend as a clear shift away from sedans and wagons toward truck SUVs and car SUVs, and that shift continued in 2024.

Manufacturer-level truck footprint figures show where the upper end sits. In 2024, Ford’s truck footprint averaged 57.6 square feet and Stellantis’s averaged 55.2, with several other manufacturers reporting truck footprints in the low-to-mid 50s.

What this means for anyone sizing a space: the vehicle you are parking is very likely larger than the vehicle a similarly named model was fifteen years ago, and much more likely to be truck-shaped. Guidance written around a sedan-dominated fleet, which is most of the storage and garage guidance in circulation, systematically undersizes.

It is worth noting one nuance in the data. Between 2023 and 2024, average weight, horsepower, and footprint all fell slightly, by less than five percent, in part because battery electric vehicles dropped from 10 percent to 7 percent of new vehicles and BEVs tend to be heavier and larger than comparable models. A single year of movement in either direction does not overturn a seventeen-year trend, but it does illustrate that the number moves with the sales mix, not just with engineering.

Sedan Dimensions by Class

Sedans are the reference point for most dimension guidance, even though they are now a minority of the market. They are also the most standardized category, because the engineering constraints are similar enough that the classes cluster tightly.

Subcompact sedans and hatchbacks

  • Length: roughly 157 to 175 inches (13.1 to 14.6 feet)
  • Width: roughly 66 to 70 inches across the body
  • Height: roughly 57 to 61 inches

This class has thinned considerably in the US as buyers moved to small crossovers. What remains skews toward hatchbacks and a handful of entry-level sedans. If a guide tells you the average car is under 14 feet, this is the only class it describes.

Compact sedans

  • Length: roughly 179 to 186 inches (14.9 to 15.5 feet)
  • Width: roughly 70 to 72 inches across the body
  • Height: roughly 55 to 57 inches

Concrete current examples: the 2026 Toyota Corolla sedan is 182.3 to 182.5 inches long, 70.1 inches wide, and 56.5 inches tall. The 2026 Honda Civic sedan is 184.8 inches long, 70.9 inches wide, and 55.7 inches tall, on a 107.7-inch wheelbase. The Civic hatchback shares the width and wheelbase but comes in shorter overall at 179 inches.

Note what these numbers mean in feet: 15.2 and 15.4. The compact class crossed the 15-foot line some time ago, and any sizing advice that assumes compacts are under 15 feet is working from stale data.

Mid-size sedans

  • Length: roughly 190 to 196 inches (15.8 to 16.3 feet)
  • Width: roughly 72 to 75 inches across the body
  • Height: roughly 56 to 58 inches

This is the family-sedan segment. The vehicles here are close enough in size that cross-shopping on dimensions rarely produces a meaningful difference. The spread across the whole class is about six inches of length.

Full-size sedans

  • Length: roughly 196 to 210 inches (16.3 to 17.5 feet)
  • Width: roughly 74 to 77 inches across the body
  • Height: roughly 56 to 60 inches

A shrinking segment, but the vehicles in it are genuinely long. A full-size sedan can be longer than a compact SUV and is often longer than a mid-size crossover. For sizing purposes this is the sedan class that starts running into the same constraints as trucks.

SUV and Crossover Dimensions by Class

SUVs and crossovers are now the largest part of the market, and they are also the category where the class names correlate worst with actual size. A “compact SUV” and a “mid-size SUV” from different manufacturers can overlap substantially.

Subcompact and compact crossovers

  • Length: roughly 165 to 182 inches (13.8 to 15.2 feet)
  • Width: roughly 69 to 74 inches across the body
  • Height: roughly 61 to 67 inches

The surprise here is that small crossovers are frequently shorter than the compact sedans they compete with. They feel bigger because they are taller and the seating position is higher, but in floor-space terms they often take up less room. If you are sizing a space, do not assume the crossover needs more length than the sedan it replaced. Measure both.

Mid-size SUVs

  • Length: roughly 180 to 197 inches (15 to 16.4 feet)
  • Width: roughly 74 to 80 inches across the body
  • Height: roughly 65 to 73 inches

This class spans two-row and three-row vehicles, which is why the range is so wide. A two-row mid-size SUV and a three-row version of nominally the same size class can differ by more than a foot of length.

Full-size SUVs

  • Length: roughly 198 to 226 inches (16.5 to 18.8 feet)
  • Width: roughly 78 to 84 inches across the body
  • Height: roughly 74 to 78 inches

Extended-wheelbase full-size SUVs are the largest non-commercial passenger vehicles sold. At the top of this range they are longer than many full-size pickups and taller than most of them. Height is the operative constraint for this class. At 74 to 78 inches before you add a roof rack, they are near the limit of a standard seven-foot door opening.

Pickup Truck Dimensions by Class

Pickups have the widest internal variation of any category, because a single model name covers a matrix of cab styles and bed lengths that can differ by nearly three feet of overall length. Quoting a single figure for a truck model is close to meaningless without the configuration.

Compact and mid-size pickups

  • Compact pickup length: roughly 180 to 200 inches (15 to 16.7 feet)
  • Mid-size pickup length: roughly 210 to 225 inches (17.5 to 18.8 feet)
  • Width: roughly 74 to 80 inches across the body
  • Height: roughly 68 to 75 inches

Full-size pickups

The 2026 Ford F-150 is a useful reference because Ford publishes complete configuration-by-configuration specifications. Across the standard lineup:

  • Regular cab, 6.5-foot box: 209.4 inches long (17.5 feet), on a 122.8-inch wheelbase. The shortest configuration.
  • SuperCrew 4x4, 6.5-foot box: 243.9 inches long (20.3 feet), on a 157.2-inch wheelbase. The longest standard configuration.
  • Width across the body: 79.9 inches on most standard-body configurations.
  • Cab height, unloaded: 75.3 to 77.1 inches, depending on drivetrain. Tremor is 79.2 inches; Raptor is 79.5 or 80.7 inches depending on tire size.
  • Track width: 67.9 inches front, 68.3 inches rear.
  • Ground clearance: 8.2 to 9.8 inches on standard configurations, more on off-road trims.

Heavy-duty pickups, the three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks, run longer and taller still, with crew cab long bed configurations approaching or exceeding 21 feet.

The configuration trap

The single most common sizing mistake with a pickup is looking up the model rather than the configuration. “An F-150” is anywhere from 17.5 to 20.8 feet long. That range straddles the boundary between a unit that works and a unit that does not. If you are sizing a space for a truck, you need the cab style, the bed length, and ideally the actual measured length including any hitch, bed extender, or tailgate-mounted accessory.

Minivan and Passenger Van Dimensions

Minivans are the most dimensionally consistent segment on the market. Every one of them is solving the same packaging problem of sliding doors, three rows, a flat load floor, and a garage-compatible height, and the solutions converge.

  • Length: roughly 199 to 205 inches (16.6 to 17.1 feet)
  • Width: roughly 78 to 80 inches across the body
  • Height: roughly 68 to 72 inches
  • Wheelbase: roughly 120 to 122 inches

Minivan height is not accidental. The segment deliberately targets a roofline that clears a typical residential garage door and a standard parking garage, which is one of its quiet advantages over a three-row SUV of similar interior capacity.

Full-size and cargo vans

Full-size vans are a different category and worth separating clearly, because people searching for “van dimensions” often get minivan numbers when they need commercial van numbers:

  • Standard-roof cargo van length: roughly 210 to 240 inches (17.5 to 20 feet)
  • Extended-length cargo van: up to roughly 290 inches (24 feet)
  • Standard-roof height: roughly 83 to 92 inches
  • High-roof height: roughly 95 to 110 inches
  • Width: roughly 79 to 84 inches across the body, more with mirrors

A high-roof cargo van will not fit through a standard storage unit door under any circumstances. At 95 inches and up, it exceeds even a generous eight-foot door opening. Vans in this category need an outdoor space or a purpose-built oversized unit, the same category of space used for RV and trailer storage.

Electric Vehicle Dimensions and Why EVs Break the Old Rules

Electric vehicles are worth their own section because the relationship between exterior size and interior space works differently, and because a few EV-specific dimensions catch people out.

  • Compact EVs: roughly 143 to 180 inches long, 66 to 76 inches wide, 56 to 66 inches tall
  • Mid-size EV sedans and crossovers: roughly 185 to 195 inches long, 73 to 87 inches wide, 57 to 67 inches tall
  • Full-size EV SUVs and trucks: roughly 192 to 232 inches long, 77 to 87 inches wide, 64 to 80 inches tall

Why the numbers behave differently

No engine bay means a shorter front overhang for the same wheelbase. A skateboard-platform EV can put the cabin further forward, so an EV with a given overall length often has noticeably more interior room than a comparable combustion vehicle. This is why EVs sometimes land in a larger EPA interior volume class than their exterior suggests.

Battery packs add height under the floor. Many EVs sit slightly taller than their combustion equivalents because the pack lives between the axles beneath the cabin. The 2026 F-150 Lightning illustrates the effect: it is wider than most gas F-150 configurations at up to 86.6 inches across the body, and it stands close to 80 inches tall.

Wider tracks are common. Battery weight and packaging tend to push EVs toward wider stances for stability. That extra width matters at doorways.

Weight is the hidden dimension. An EV can be 1,000 to 2,000 pounds heavier than a same-size combustion vehicle.   • Length: roughly 154 to 190 inches (12.8 to 15.8 feet). Small roadsters sit at the bottom; front-engine grand tourers and muscle cars at the top.
  • Width: roughly 68 to 78 inches across the body. Proportionally the widest category relative to length.
  • Height: roughly 47 to 52 inches. The lowest of any category by a wide margin.
  • Ground clearance: frequently 3.5 to 5 inches, and sometimes less on performance trims with aero packages.

The dimensions that actually matter for a sports car

Length and height are rarely the constraint. Three other things are:

Ground clearance and approach angle. A car with four inches of clearance and a long front overhang will scrape on a driveway apron, a speed bump, or the lip at the threshold of a drive-up unit. This is the single most common damage complaint with low cars in storage, and it happens on the way in, not while parked. If you are storing something low, walk the approach before you drive it.

Door length. Two-door cars have long doors. A coupe door can need 40 inches or more of clearance to open far enough for an adult to get out comfortably, compared to roughly 26 to 30 inches for a four-door sedan. In a narrow space, a two-door car is harder to get out of than a four-door of the same width.

Convertible top clearance. A soft top should not be stored under pressure or in contact with anything. If you are covering a convertible, the cover needs to sit on the top without a rack or shelf pressing down on it.

Wheelbase, Track Width, Overhang, and Ground Clearance Explained

Spec sheets carry more dimensions than length, width, and height, and a few of them are more useful than the headline numbers for specific problems.

Wheelbase is the distance from the center of the front wheel to the center of the rear wheel. It governs ride quality, interior length, and turning circle. A 2026 Honda Civic sits on a 107.7-inch wheelbase; a 2026 F-150 SuperCrew runs 145.4 or 157.2 inches depending on bed length. For maneuvering into a tight space, wheelbase matters more than overall length, because it determines how sharply the vehicle can turn.

Track width is the distance between the centerlines of the two tires on the same axle. The 2026 F-150 measures 67.9 inches at the front and 68.3 inches at the rear. Track is always narrower than body width, and it is one of the two inputs to the federal footprint calculation.

Overhang is the body that extends beyond the axles: front overhang ahead of the front axle, rear overhang behind the rear axle. The 2026 F-150 has 37.4 inches of front overhang and 49.2 inches of rear. Overhang is the difference between wheelbase and overall length, and it is the part of the vehicle that scrapes on steep transitions. The rest is mostly context.

Two things stand out from the ordering. A full-size sedan is longer than a compact SUV and often longer than a mid-size two-row SUV. The sedan is simply lower, so it reads as smaller. And a crew cab pickup is longer than everything else on the list except an extended cargo van, by a margin of two to three feet over the next category down. If you drive a crew cab, you are operating in a different size regime than nearly every other passenger vehicle on the road, and generic guidance will not serve you.

The Measurements Manufacturers Do Not Advertise

Every practical fitting problem eventually runs into a dimension that is not on the brochure. These are the ones that come up most.

Width with mirrors extended. Covered above, but it bears repeating because it is the most consequential omission. Most manufacturers publish body width only. Ford is a useful exception, publishing five separate width figures for the F-150. For everything else, measure across the mirrors yourself.

Width with the doors open. This is the number that determines whether you can actually get out of the car once it is parked. A four-door sedan typically needs 26 to 30 inches per side to open a front door far enough for an adult to exit without contorting. A two-door coupe can need 40 inches or more. Total width with both front doors fully open on a mid-size sedan commonly exceeds 12 feet.

Length including the hitch. A receiver hitch with a ball mount installed adds 8 to 14 inches beyond the rear bumper. A bike rack in the receiver adds 24 to 36 inches. Neither is in the published length. This is the most common reason a vehicle that should fit a space does not.

Length including a spare tire carrier or rear-mounted accessory. Swing-out carriers add 6 to 12 inches.

Height including everything on the roof. Also covered above. Crossbars, boxes, tents, light bars, and antennas all count and none are in the spec.

Turning circle. Usually published, usually ignored. Curb-to-curb turning circles run about 34 to 38 feet for a compact car and 45 to 50 feet for a full-size crew cab pickup. In a storage facility with a narrow drive aisle, turning circle is what determines whether you can line up on a unit door at all, and it is why wide drive aisles matter more for vehicle storage than almost any other feature.

Actual as-modified dimensions. Any aftermarket change (a lift, larger tires, a bumper, a roof rack, running boards, a bed cap) makes the factory numbers wrong. If the vehicle has been modified, the factory spec is a starting point and nothing more.

How to Measure Your Own Vehicle

Fifteen minutes with a tape measure resolves every question this article has raised about your specific vehicle. Do it on level ground, with the vehicle at normal ride height and normal load.

  1. Overall length. Measure from the furthest forward point to the furthest rearward point, parallel to the ground, not following the curve of the bodywork. Include the hitch, ball mount, spare carrier, bike rack, or anything else currently attached. If you can, drop a plumb line or hold a straight edge vertically at each end and measure between the two points on the ground. That is more accurate than trying to run a tape along the body.
  2. Overall width across the body. Measure at the widest point, which is usually the fenders or the flares, not the doors.
  3. Overall width across the mirrors. Measure from the outer edge of one mirror to the outer edge of the other, with the mirrors in their normal driving position.
  4. Width with mirrors folded. If your mirrors fold, take this measurement too. It is often the number that gets you through a doorway.
  5. Overall height. Measure from the ground to the highest fixed point, including roof racks, antennas, and anything mounted up there. If the antenna is removable, note the height both ways.
  6. Width with the driver door fully open. Measure from the far side of the vehicle to the outer edge of the open door. This tells you the minimum aisle you need on the driver side to actually get out.
  7. Ground clearance at the lowest point. Usually a crossmember, exhaust component, or air dam. Slide a ruler under and find the tightest spot.

Write these down and keep them in your phone. They will be relevant every time you rent a space, book a ferry, evaluate a garage, or size a car cover, and re-measuring is more annoying than recording it once.

A note on precision

You do not need to be accurate to the quarter inch. You need to be accurate to about two inches and honest about the biggest number rather than the most flattering one. Rounding up is free. Rounding down is how people end up unable to close a door.

Where to Find Your Car’s Official Dimensions

If measuring is not practical, there are several ways to get factory figures, in rough order of reliability.

The manufacturer’s technical specification sheet for that model year. This is the best source and the most overlooked. Most automakers publish a detailed specifications document for each model year, broken out by configuration, and they usually contain dimensions that never make it into consumer-facing marketing pages: overhangs, track widths, multiple width figures, bed dimensions, and clearance angles. Search for the model year, the model name, and the word specifications.

The owner’s manual. Most include a specifications appendix with exterior dimensions for the specific configuration you own. If you have the manual, this is faster than anything online.

A VIN decoder. Your VIN identifies the exact build, including trim and factory options that affect dimensions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration operates a free public VIN decoder, and several manufacturers and parts retailers offer their own. The federal decoder is oriented toward safety and equipment data rather than dimensions, so results vary by make.

The dealership or service department. Give them the VIN and they can pull the factory build sheet. Useful when the vehicle is older or the configuration is unusual.

The door jamb sticker. It will not give you exterior dimensions, but it does confirm the exact model, build date, tire size, and gross vehicle weight rating, which helps you find the right spec sheet.

Where you should be careful: aggregator sites and dealer blog posts that reproduce specifications. They are convenient, but they frequently mix model years, average across configurations, or reproduce a figure from a previous generation. If a number matters, confirm it against the manufacturer’s own document or against your own tape measure.

Car Dimensions vs. Parking Space Dimensions

Parking stall dimensions are set by local zoning codes and vary between municipalities, so there is no single national standard. The common ranges are narrow enough to be useful anyway.

  • Standard surface stall: roughly 8.5 to 9 feet wide by 18 to 20 feet long
  • Compact-designated stall: roughly 7.5 to 8 feet wide by 15 to 16 feet long
  • Parallel parking space: roughly 8 feet wide by 20 to 24 feet long
  • Accessible stall: standard stall width plus a marked access aisle, typically 5 or 8 feet
  • Structured parking garage clearance height: commonly 6 feet 8 inches to 7 feet 2 inches, sometimes posted lower

What this means in practice

A 9-foot stall is 108 inches. A mid-size sedan at 74 inches across the body leaves 34 inches split between two sides, enough to open a door if the car next to you parked reasonably. A full-size pickup at 80 inches across the body leaves 28 inches total. That is why trucks in normal stalls end up hugging one line.

The height figure is the one that ends badly. Structured parking garages are frequently posted at 6 feet 8 inches. A full-size SUV at 77 inches is 6 feet 5 inches, which clears, but barely. Add a roof rack with a cargo box and you are at 8 feet or more, and you will not clear. Every year, a predictable number of rooftop boxes are destroyed on parking garage entrances by drivers who knew their vehicle height and forgot what was on top of it.

Compact-designated stalls are also worth a caution. At 15 to 16 feet, a compact stall is shorter than most vehicles the EPA classifies as compact. The stall designation refers to a size category that has largely stopped existing at that length. If your compact sedan is 15.4 feet, it does not fit a 15-foot stall without overhang.

Car Dimensions vs. Home Garage Dimensions

Residential garages are the reason a great many people end up looking for storage in the first place, so it is worth being specific about why they run out of room.

Typical residential garage dimensions:

  • Single-car garage interior: roughly 12 by 20 feet, sometimes as small as 10 by 18 in older housing stock
  • Two-car garage interior: roughly 20 by 20 feet, with 22 by 22 common in newer construction
  • Single garage door opening: 8 or 9 feet wide by 7 feet tall, with 8-foot-tall doors increasingly common in newer builds
  • Double garage door opening: 16 feet wide by 7 feet tall
  • Interior ceiling height: commonly 8 to 10 feet

The 20-foot problem

A great many garages are 20 feet deep. That is 240 inches. A crew cab pickup at 243.9 inches does not fit, because the door will not close behind it. A crew cab at 232 inches fits with 8 inches to spare, which is not enough room to walk around the front of the vehicle, and not enough margin for a garage with a step, a water heater, or shelving at the back wall.

This is why full-size truck owners so often park outside a garage they technically own. It is also why the demand for vehicle storage skews toward trucks and larger SUVs. The vehicles grew; the housing stock did not.

The height version of the same problem: a 7-foot garage door is 84 inches. A full-size SUV at 77 inches clears by 7 inches. A lifted truck, a van, or anything with a roof box does not. Newer construction with 8-foot doors solves this; most existing housing does not have it.

The width version: a 20-foot-wide two-car garage is 240 inches. Two mid-size SUVs at 78 inches each consume 156 inches, leaving 84 inches split across three gaps: two walls and the middle. That is 28 inches each, which is right at the edge of being able to open a door. Two full-size pickups in a 20-foot garage is not realistically a two-vehicle garage anymore.

Storage Unit Dimensions vs. Vehicle Dimensions: The Door Is the Real Constraint

This is the section that motivated the whole guide, and it is the thing that virtually no size guide tells you.

A ten-foot-wide storage unit does not have a ten-foot-wide door.

Storage unit dimensions describe the interior floor. The roll-up door is set into the front wall, and the door opening is narrower than the unit and shorter than the ceiling. On a 10-foot-wide unit, the door opening is commonly 8 feet or 9 feet wide (96 or 108 inches) and commonly 7 feet tall, which is 84 inches. Some facilities specify 8-foot-tall doors, and door manufacturers offer openings up to 10 feet wide and 10 feet tall, but those are not what you should assume you are getting.

So the sequence of constraints your vehicle has to satisfy, in order, is:

  1. Door opening width: can the vehicle physically pass through, mirrors accounted for?
  2. Door opening height: can it pass under, roof accessories accounted for?
  3. Interior depth minus door clearance: will the door close behind it?
  4. Interior width minus door swing: can you get out once you are in?

Length, the number everyone checks first, is third on that list.

Running the width numbers

Take a 96-inch door opening, which is a reasonable default on a 10-foot-wide unit:

  • Compact sedan, mirrors extended (roughly 81 inches): about 15 inches of total clearance, 7 or 8 inches per side. Workable at low speed with a spotter or a camera.
  • Mid-size SUV, mirrors extended (roughly 88 to 92 inches): 4 to 8 inches total. Very tight. Folding the mirrors is strongly advisable.
  • Full-size pickup, standard mirrors extended (95.7 inches on a 2026 F-150): essentially zero clearance against a 96-inch opening. Not feasible with the mirrors out.
  • Full-size pickup, mirrors folded (83.6 inches on the same truck): about 12 inches total, 6 inches per side. Feasible, slowly, with mirrors folded every single time.
  • Full-size pickup with trailer tow mirrors extended (105.9 inches): wider than the opening. Will not pass. Folded, at 85.3 inches, it will.

If the facility has 9-foot (108-inch) door openings, every one of those numbers improves by a foot, and the picture changes considerably. Which is exactly why this is a question to ask rather than assume.

Running the height numbers

Against an 84-inch door opening:

  • Sedan at 56 inches: 28 inches of clearance. Irrelevant constraint.
  • Mid-size SUV at 70 inches: 14 inches. Fine, unless there is a cargo box up there.
  • Full-size SUV at 77 inches: 7 inches. Fine bare, gone with a roof rack and box.
  • Full-size pickup at 75 to 77 inches: 7 to 9 inches. Fine bare.
  • Off-road trim pickup at 79 to 81 inches: 3 to 5 inches. Confirm before renting.
  • Lifted truck, roof-racked SUV, or high-roof van: frequently over 84 inches. Will not clear.

The one instruction that matters

Ask the facility for the door opening dimensions, not the unit dimensions. Unit size is a floor area. The door is the aperture. They are different numbers and only one of them determines whether your vehicle gets inside. Door openings genuinely vary by facility, by building, and by construction vintage, so this is not a question anyone can answer for you from a spec table, including this one.

Width Math: Why a Ten-Foot Unit Is Not Ten Feet of Usable Room

Getting the vehicle through the door is the first problem. Getting yourself out of the vehicle afterward is the second, and it is the one people discover on move-in day.

A 10-foot-wide unit gives you 120 inches of interior width, and often slightly less once wall framing is accounted for. Park a vehicle in the middle of it and you split the remainder evenly across two sides:

  • Compact sedan at 70 inches: 50 inches remaining, 25 inches per side
  • Mid-size sedan at 74 inches: 46 inches remaining, 23 inches per side
  • Mid-size SUV at 78 inches: 42 inches remaining, 21 inches per side
  • Full-size pickup at 80 inches: 40 inches remaining, 20 inches per side
  • Full-size SUV at 84 inches: 36 inches remaining, 18 inches per side

Now compare those against what a door actually needs. A four-door sedan front door wants 26 to 30 inches to open far enough for an adult to get out without gymnastics. A two-door coupe wants 40 inches or more.

Centered in a 10-foot unit, nothing wider than a compact sedan gives you a comfortable door opening on both sides. A mid-size SUV centered in a 10-foot unit gives you 21 inches per side, which is a squeeze on both.

The fix is simple and almost nobody mentions it

Do not center the vehicle. Park it deliberately off to one side, leaving 4 to 6 inches on the passenger side and putting everything else on the driver side.

Redo the mid-size SUV: 78-inch vehicle, 6 inches on the passenger side, and 36 inches on the driver side. Thirty-six inches is a comfortable door opening. The problem dissolves entirely, and it costs nothing but paying attention while you park.

For a full-size pickup at 80 inches: 6 inches on the passenger side leaves 34 inches on the driver side. Also workable.

Two caveats on the off-center approach. First, you need to be able to fold the passenger mirror or accept that it sits very close to the wall. At 6 inches of body clearance, an unfolded mirror is likely touching. Second, if you plan to store anything alongside the vehicle, such as tires, tools, or a set of covers, you need to decide before you park, because you cannot put it on the passenger side afterward.

Depth clearance, briefly

Interior depth is not fully usable either. The roll-up door needs room for the bottom bar to clear as it comes down, and the door track hardware intrudes near the ceiling at the front. On a 20-foot-deep unit, plan on roughly 19 to 19.5 feet of usable parking depth rather than the full 20.

That is why a 243.9-inch crew cab pickup, at 20.3 feet, does not go into a 10x20 even though the arithmetic on paper looks close. It needs a 10x30.

What Size Storage Unit Do I Need for My Car?

With the door and width constraints established, the sizing question becomes straightforward arithmetic. Here is the method, then the results.

The method

  1. Measure the vehicle’s actual overall length, including hitch and any rear-mounted accessory.
  2. Add about five feet. That buffer is what turns a technically-fits situation into one where you can back in without a spotter and walk around the front of the vehicle inside the unit.
  3. Round up to the next available unit depth.
  4. Separately confirm the door opening width and height against your mirrors-extended width and your full roof height.

The five-foot buffer is the part people are tempted to skip. Do not. Without it you are threading the vehicle in on every visit, and the first time you misjudge it you will find out what the wall costs.

Where that lands by vehicle type

  • Motorcycle or scooter (6–8 ft): a 5x10 enclosed unit. A 10x10 holds two comfortably with room for gear and a stand.
  • Small roadster or short hatchback (under 15 ft): a 10x15 works, and it is one of the few passenger vehicles that genuinely does. Confirm the length first, because most things called compact exceed 15 feet.
  • Compact or mid-size sedan (15–16.5 ft): a 10x20. A 10x15 is 15 feet deep with less than that usable, and most compact sedans are now over 15 feet. This is the correction that matters most in this guide.
  • Compact or mid-size SUV (15–16.5 ft): a 10x20, with door height confirmed.
  • Full-size sedan (16.5–17.5 ft): a 10x20 fits; a 10x25 or 10x30 is more comfortable if you also want to store anything alongside it.
  • Full-size SUV or minivan (16.5–19 ft): a 10x20 at absolute minimum, 10x30 preferred, and door height is the binding constraint rather than length.
  • Mid-size pickup (17.5–19 ft): a 10x20 for shorter configurations, 10x30 for longer ones.

A vehicle rarely goes into storage by itself. Winter tires, a jack, a battery tender, covers, spare parts, and detailing supplies tend to travel with it. If that describes your situation, add the footprint of that pile to your calculation rather than assuming it fits in the gap at the front, because the gap at the front is the five feet you just allocated to being able to move around.

The practical version: if you are storing a vehicle plus a meaningful amount of related gear, go one size up from what the vehicle alone requires.

Outdoor Parking vs. Enclosed Unit, and When You Do Not Need Either

Everything above assumes you want an enclosed unit. For a lot of people, that is the wrong product, and the dimensional headaches this guide has described mostly disappear when you pick the other one.

When an outdoor parking space is the better answer

An assigned outdoor space in a gated lot has no door opening, no height limit, and no width constraint to work around. It is also consistently the least expensive way to store a vehicle. It is the right choice if:

  • Your vehicle is too big for a standard unit. Crew cab trucks, high-roof vans, lifted vehicles, and anything with a permanent roof rack are fighting the door on every visit. Stop fighting it.
  • You access the vehicle frequently. Backing a truck through a 96-inch door twice a month gets old quickly.
  • It is a daily driver or a work vehicle. These are already living outdoors. Paying an enclosed premium for a vehicle that sits in a driveway the rest of the time is spending money on nothing.
  • You are solving a parking problem rather than a preservation problem. If the issue is an HOA rule, a three-car household with a two-car driveway, or a street parking ordinance, an outdoor space solves it completely.

When an enclosed unit earns the premium

  • Motorcycles. Small, valuable, easy to move, and much better off out of sight and out of the weather.
  • Classic and collector vehicles. Paint and interiors that you care about should not be sitting in direct sun.
  • Anything parked for a year or more. The longer the sit, the more the enclosure is worth.
  • Convertibles. Soft tops age fastest under UV exposure.
  • Cases where you need to store the vehicle and its gear together in one secured space.

Enclosed units also protect against extreme temperatures if you choose a temperature-regulated unit, which is worth considering for a vehicle with an interior you want to preserve. Availability of vehicle-sized climate-controlled units varies considerably by location.

When you should not rent anything at all

Some honest cases where storage is the wrong purchase:

You are storing a vehicle you have already decided to sell. Monthly storage on a car you are not driving and do not intend to keep is a slow, quiet loss. Vehicles depreciate while parked, and a stored car accumulates its own set of problems: flat spots, a dead battery, dried seals. If the plan is to sell it eventually, selling it now is almost always the better financial outcome. Run the numbers before you sign.

You have a driveway and the only objection is aesthetic. If nothing is actually forcing the vehicle off your property, with no HOA rule, no ordinance, and no genuine space conflict, a car cover costs a fraction of a year of storage.

The vehicle does not run and you have no plan to fix it. Stored vehicles generally need to be operable and free of fluid leaks, because an immobile vehicle becomes a serious problem at the end of a lease. A non-running project car with no timeline is better resolved than parked.

You need the space for under a month. For a genuinely short gap between a move-out and a move-in, a friend’s driveway, an airport long-term lot, or a monthly parking garage may cost less than a storage lease once you account for the terms.
